Topic: RE: wanting to go back to work
Nancy,
You have a pulse, right? And a license? Are you kidding? You can get a job working on a med/surg floor by tomorrow!!! You'll be surprised at how much you still know. It's mostly common sense, anyway. Just take the time to look up the new meds as you give them and you're home free!!!
Thank goodness for the nursing shortage, it's so easy to find a job!!

Topic: RE: RN Salaries?
I am in the Washington, DC area and new grads start anywhere between $21 and $25 an hour here plus shift differentials (which vary...some are as low as $1-$2 per shift for a night or evening shift, some are up to $7-8 more for a weekend shift, while other places base it on a percentage). I am making about 80K/year in management, but the cost of living here is pretty high...a townhouse costs at least $250,000. Luckily I bought mine a few years ago before the rel estate prices skyrocketed (my place has more than doubled in value in less than 5 years).
But, I LOVE nursing and can't imagine being anything but a nurse. It is really hard work, but also very rewarding and the variety is GREAT. I have worked ICU, Labor and delivery, recovery room, oncology, management... The shortage is only getting worse, so there will always be lots of opportunity to come...the work will always be hard, but there will always be a need for nurses!

Topic: wanting to go back to work
I am an RN-Associates Degree. I haven't worked as an RN since 97 but would like to get back in the work force. Any suggestions for brushing up on my skills? I called the local college but they don't offer any refresher courses. Thank you. Nancy
Topic: RE: drinking while eating?
I agree. When I am in a restaurant, and the wait staff asks what I would like to drink, and I say nothing, they look at me as if I was nuts. So now, I just order a glass of water and leave it there.
Topic: 6x scrubs
I have 2 scrub tops that I ordered online from a company that has since gone out of business. They are 6x. If anyone wants these, I will send them for only the shipping cost of $10. One has cute brightly colored cats on it & the other is an open front style in a mostly blue pattern. Both are short sleeved. The first has 2 pockets.
They are in great condition.

Topic: RE: RN Salaries?
Here in Nc the hospital nuse salary varies a lot with experience......20.00 to 38.00.....and there is weekend and shift differential and with or without benefits. I work at a hospital here occasionally in addition to my full time job and dont have benefits there. when I work there I make 32.00 to 37.75 depending on the day of the week and the shift.
Thats how I got the $4,700 together for my out of pocket payment for my surgery April 25.
cost of living here is much better than CA so money goes further

Topic: RE: New to this Messageboard...
Check with local fire departments (some of them have individual instructors who adapt dates to teach) and Red Cross, and Hospital Volunteer departments!
Another place to check is the local "per diem" nursing agencies... mine offers all three certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS) in New Orleans.
Topic: New to the Nursing board!
Hiya guys, I finally figured out how to find the nursing board!! I've been posting on the main board for a while. Because I don't use my real name (yes, it shows up on Google and more if you use your full name) I've been under this login...
But my name is Kat
For those of you interested in visiting Louisiana, check out my post about the May 7 party at my house in New Orleans area!!!
Good to see you all!
Topic: RE: Thinking of Nursing career - advise please!
Gracie, I envy you... both those AP areas are what I'm interested in... I just can't decide between them.
Hmmmm.... Nurse Midwife or Nurse Coroner... that's my goal eventually, one of them.
And I do agree, if you get into nursing, it neeeeeeeds to be for the right reasons.... IMO you will make more mistakes and could miss vital information if you have general disinterest in the patients
