not sad, just confused(thats the best smiley they had lol)
Hey Katie,
I know this is not politically correct, but i'd never recommend anyone getting either the lap band or the DS...i've read the revision board, and the weight loss surgery failure forums too many times to think that they'd have been a good choice for me.
The reality though is that you have to choose it for yourself, look at the boards, visit all the surgery forums, get feed back.
After talking to my surgeon, talking to people that have had the surgery, and floating on these forums for months, i chose the Duodenal Switch. (check out the forum on this board and on www.duodenal switch.com)
Why did i choose it?
Lots of reasons, but here are the top 10:
1) i didn't want to dump
2) i didn't want to have to worry about a stoma and food getting stuck
3) i wanted to lose the most weight possible and the DS on average has the highest excess weight loss percentage
4) i didn't want to regain, again the DS on average has the highest retained weight loss of all the surgeries
5) i wanted a fully functional stomach (the DS leaves your pyloric valve in place)
6) i eventually wanted to be able to drink with meals.
7) i wanted to be able to eat a "normal" size meal. At 3 months post op i'm eatting about 6 to 8 oz per meal, and that will increase over time.
8) I never wanted to have to go through a 2nd weight loss surgery, if you read the Revision board, and the WLS failure board, you will see there are tons of RNYers and Lap band patients but no DSers
9) I like fatty foods..bacon, regular mayo etc. I wanted to be able to continue to eat them without fear. Because of the DS i bypass about 80 percent of the fat i eat, which means 80 percent of the calories with it. You know it's funny to me that a Bacon has become a "healthy" choice for me. The fat is bypassed, and it is very protein rich.
10) I didn't want to feel punished by getting weight loss surgery. I felt that the other 2 surgeries would have done that to me. I didn't want to be on a diet forever, i have had that since i was 7. Once at goal most DSers can eat pretty freely, and that includes sugar.
NOW i'm sure if you ask a RNYer the same question they could give you a top 10 for why they didn't have the other 2 surgeries....
as i started by saying, it's a personal choice that you have to make.
