Hi you wonderful people!!! I have only 5 days to go (June 5). I read an article about this guy who used his c-pap machiene after surgery in the hospital . The pressure was set too high and it blew open his new pouch ....almost died from this . I do have to burp every am . I talked with a respiratory therapist today that brought my new machiene and explained to him about the burping in the am and he said i should be very concerned. My md wants it at 16 thats high! Please help me with any information . Im seeing my surgeon tomorrow and would like to show him some kind of print out Thanks...........Please help!!!............Kitty

Kitty - I was at 20/16 (BIPAP) and didn't have any specific issues, but probably like most people, I would talk to both the respiratory therapy staff during your preop workup, the WLS coordinator (or equivalent) at the hospital (usually an RN) and most importantly, your surgeon, and see what they have to say in regards to it and using it very early post op. I hadn't ever read anything like that, and I know most surgeons do "do" some sort of pressure test with far more than a CPAP can put out, so I would hope that it would be more stable than that... but... Like I said.. check with all of the above, just to make sure; then **do** whatever your surgeon tells you Best of luck - ...Nick

Kitty, I agree with Nick. You should get advice from Dr Pearlstein and the respiratory therapist at CMH. You could do a google search for gastric bypass and cpap risks or something like that, but I'm sure if you expressed your concerns to the MD and professionals, they would address them. One person's account of a horrific event doesn't necessarily put you at risk. You don't know all of the details of his situation.... Take it easy, Amy

My bi-pap is set at 18/14 I used mine right in the recovery room. Yes, I had some of the burping affect but it didnt damage my pouch at all. Good luck with your upcoming surgery and soon you will be a loser.....just like us!!!! Kel

My surgery is Aug. 4th. I looked up Gastric Bypass and CPAP Risks on Google. Very interesting reading. Hope it settles some of your questions. Nancy
