How long to wait after heart attack

I also posted this on the Main Messageboard. This is probably a strange question. I was 3 months into the process of my Dr. supervised dieting and about the see the psychiatrist when I suddenly had a heart attack. This happened almost 4 weeks ago. How long do you think I would have to wait to have surgery? Should I start up again with the Dr. supervised dieting? Should I hold off on even thinking about WLS? I know I will need to have surgical clearance from my new best friend, my cardiologist. I'm just looking for some opinions.

Hey Purple, Sorry to hear about your heart attack, I hope your feeling well now!!!! To the best of my knowledge most doctors want to see several EKGs that are normal before they will even touch you. My mom had to wait about 6 - 7 months before they would even consider her. Starting back w/ the Dr. supervised diet could be nothing but good for you at this point, so go for it with that. But talk to your surgeon about how long to wait, he/ she is the only one who will give you the right answer! GOOD LUCK and TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!!! Ilyssa

I would have to agree with Debra and Ilyssa that this kind of question should only be answered by your cardiologist and sugeon. They are the ones who have all the information on your cardiac status and know the stressors that your heart will have to deal with during surgery and post operatively. Weight loss itself is a stressor on many systems in the body, so, again, I think it might be best for your cardiologist to determine (maybe with a nutritionist) what will be best diet-wise at this point. I imagine the goal right now is to get your heart strong. I'm sure it must be so incredibly frustrating to hold back on this surgery in light of the fact that in the end, weight loss with be better for your heart, but I'm sure you also know that playing it safe is of great importance to you now. Please let us know, as you find out information. In the meantime, I will be sending healing thoughts your way. Hugs, Amy

See...that's why I continue to come here. You are all so encouraging and level headed. Thanks for the well wishes. I think I will talk to my cardiologist at my next visit.

Sorry to hear about your heart attack. I had one in 1998. Then another this past Dec.My heart doctor said I had to wait 3 months. O.K. had my surgery the end of March 2006. Then I had another heart attack the end of April. I feel fine now but I would get a few opinions from cardiologists. I really think though the wls was too much for my poor heart to handle. I hope this helps in some way. Good luck.
