amts lost ?
have a question for you guys. it seems that the rny is always done if there is a substantial amt. to lose and the lap for lightwieghts. is this correct? i'm far from a light weight so i dont think the lap would be beneficial to me. ps-(i know its the surgeons decision) thanks sue aka clueless in syracuse...lol

Not necessarily. I am on email lists and have seen bandsters on there with starting weights over 500 pounds. One in particular is now under 400 pounds and still losing.
Do you struggle with sugar, or carbs? I struggled with carbs so I chose the lap band. I can't eat bread, pasta and rice anymore, my band won't let me.
There were other reasons I chose the band too, because I have iron deficiency problems. If you tend to struggle with sugar cravings, RNY might be best. But the best thing to do is research and talk procedure and health aspects over with your surgeon.

No, it's not nuts at all
My first fill, I felt nothing. I had no idea the needle was in me. 2nd and 3rd fill it was painful, but not unbearable. I asked the surgeon why it hurt compared to the 1st time and she said it was because of scar tissue. I am laying down and can't see the needle going in, so it's not bad. I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

Hi, I believe it is your decision,I choose Lap Band (waiting for a surgery date)
and honey I am no lightweight!!! I told my surgeon that is what I wanted and he agreed with me. I believe the study is 3-5 years after surgery it all evens out between the two surgery's. RNY loses quicker but we end up at the same point, eventually.

I wanted to stop by and first of all say hi and this is a great decision for me to have surgery. I too am in Syracuse and Dr. Kim is my Dr. my surgery is July 24 (soon)
and at first my Dr recommened me to have lap and i'm 278# and my insurance would not cover that because it's still in the expiremental stages they said so i'm haveing rny done and I know that is a good choice for me after reading up on it. Whatever you choose in your journey I wish you the best of luck.

Hi Heather,
I know we've corresponded before, and just wanted to say that the lap band has been FDA approved since 2003. I think maybe that's something some insurance companies might try to tell people, but the band has been around for awhile. I know of someone who has been banded for 7 years! Of course she was banded in Mexico since it wasn't approved here until 2003. Sharon Osbourne has been banded for awhile, so I've heard

Hi Sue,
I know from my experience it depends on the doctor, your co-morbidities if you have any and your insurance company. For me, I was 108lbs overweight the morning of surgery and and I had the RNY. For me it was the best choice b/c of the disapline needed for RNY vs. the band. If I had had the lap band, I don't feel I would have lost as much weight as I did, b/c you can tolerate more carbs and that would be my down fault! But I have now lost 113lbs.
Best of luck!
