Hey guys! Its been awhile, just thought I'd update. I was admitted Wednesday into hopsital with a "pan colon and infectious colitis" which is when the entire colon is infected from bacteria. I have a really bad bacteria infection and was severely dehydrated. I've had Diahrea since last Monday and just thought I had a stomach virus that my kids had the week prior. Little did I know how sick I really was. I am on meds, but still have Diahrea. My surgeon said to contact a GI doctor if it continues and I yet to do it because I keep hoping the diahrea will go away. my fever and stomach pain is gone but not the diahrea. the doctors in hopsital said that this type of bacteria is normally cuased by antibiotic (7-weeks out since my RNY) or from a vacation or something like that. Well I came home on Friday, but its been 10 days of diahrea. It has slowed down in persistance and volume, but am a bit concerned? Has anyone else had this? How long till goes away? Hugs, Lisa

Hi Lisa Sorry you are having soooooo many problems. I had the complete opposite. The first 10 days after RNY I did not go to the bathroom at all. That's not good either. Hope all goes well for you. I see you live in Ronkonkoma. I have relatives there. Lots of them. The last name is Compasso. Do you know any of them? I'm almost at one year. The 18th. I haven't had any real problems at all. Thank God. I just take one day at a time. I lost 140 pound so far. I feel great. Email me anytime to chat. Have a good night........... Marie Edie

Lisa, Hun I am sending my thoughts and prayers your way that you get over this soon.. ~hugs~ I had the runs for about the first 6-9 weeks then it leveled out. I still have bouts of the runs or constipation. I guess it will always be a battle to keep it in check but if that is what it takes to keep the weight off then so be it Just keep in contact with your surgeon and he will direct you to what is right. He is a very skilled surgeon with so much knowledge, just make sure you keep him posted. Also keep us posted on how it is going.... ~hugs~ Debra P

HUGS!!! I had a very bad bought with a stomach bug in december and i had to see a gastro. doctor...but by the time i went i was better. I had two weeks of the runs and it was bad. THE speicialist did say these bugs will take long to rid beign i have lest stomach juices in my stomach to work off the bad bacterias being i have rerouted my plumbing. LATER i learned by seeing with others that the stomach bugs going around were like this never ending for people who didnt have surgery too. IT was a nightmare.... and the my regular doctor had even thought i was eating wrong foods post op and was sick from that. AND that pissed me off. HANG in there but you should go see the GI doctor even if your feeling better. We have to be careful and ur so early post op that your still healing and you dont want damage. SO i would say go to the Upper GI doc even if your feeling better just to be sure. AND good luck i know what your going thru its a horrible thing.

I (thankfully) have never had this problem but many in the DS community (the weight loss surgery I had ... more intestine bypassed than distal RNY and 3/4s of my stomach removed v having a pouch) swear by acidophillus -- especially after coming off a dose of antibiotics. It helps restore the "good bacteria" in the intestines and curtail the diarrhea. Twinlab's "Super Acidophillus" has a good concentration of the "probiotics" to stem the bad bacteria. Also, yogurt can help do this; just make sure it says "active live cultures" on the container. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Good luck and God bless.

Hey Lisa, You probably should ask your doctor (if they haven't put you on it already) about a treatment of Flagyl (i think i spelled it right). It's an another antibotic that a lot of post RNY and DSers go on after surgery to control bacteria outgrowth in their lower intestines. Some stay on it long term to control DHR and extreme problems with gas. I don't take the flagyl, but i do take a probiotic everyday...one that has 3 billion units of organisms in it. In the mean time you might want to add a fiber suppliment to your diet. It helps bind you up a bit. scott
