I never realized how much i used food to comfort me until i had this surgery on 5/18! Never having dealt with a truly stressful situation prior to this i want to know what to do now! How do all you former "emotional eaters" deal with stress now? Thanks so much for taking the time to look at this. It's been (8) weeks and i'm hoping this gets easier soon! I just hit 3 years out last Tuesday and I think it gets harder. As you get farther out yu are able to tolerate different foods and a slightly larger portion so at this point it is smart choices and will power. Remember this surgery is more of a tool to help us we need to make the final choices. Like my doctor said I am doing surgery on you stomach not your brain. Let me tell you that is sooo right. I hardly ever feel hungry it is the head hunger that I fight on a daily basis. Good luck to you. I find it best to keep in touch with others and attend support group meetings, they do help alot. thank you so much for answering so quickly! I know the weight loss is just a tool but have you found anything to replace the food if you were an emotional eater? I'm doing well now food wise and making good choices i just need something to keep my mind occupied whilst i'm making these good choices.

Hi Andi, Hon this is a problem I struggle with, so I understand exactly what you are going through and here's what I've found out -- you can't replace the food, you have to deal with the problem. I have and still have a lot of issues that make me want to eat at times and I want the sweets and I tried the hobbies, the reading, the distractions, but the only thing that has helped is fixing what's making me emotional and dealing with my feelings better. I found since the surgery that I had a lot of issues I had been burying and I could either keep burying them (MAYBE with something else) or I could tackle them head on. I'm going for door #2 at the moment and believe me it's a LOT of work. Dealing with the added hormonal aspect of the surgery doesn't help either. I've had a few therapy sessions through the EAP program at work and that seems to be helping a bit. Just a thought! Vi
