OK this is minor thing for some, but i grew up on Long Island about 10 minutes from the beach by car. I spent every day of the summer at the beach for as long as I can remember. Currently I'm living in orange county, and I have to be honest, while it is much more affordable, still commutable to the city (about an 1 1/2 hours by car or train ..there is an express that takes 66 minutes), and it has nice mountain views....I MISS THE BEACH!!!!! I've been up here for 5 years, and besides a pond that they called a lake in my town there really is no place to swim. Yes, i do have a gym membership, but swimming in a pool is not the same as swimming at a beach. Does anyone know of swimming places in the orange, rockland, dutchess area? OK here is my one criteria, it has to be clean. The lake that is close to my house was gross. I mean the geese were swimming and pooping right next to you!!!!! I guess you just don't think of it when your in the ocean or long island sound...lol. Anyway thanks for your help. scott

Hi Scott, How about the reservoir? We have a place here in Ulster County (which of course you failed to mention!!!!) that is on the reservoir, and it's for swimming. Okay, some geese poop. LOL You are very right. I grew up in CT, right across the sound from you. The beach was a regular weekend adventure, something I took for granted. Recently I was in NC at Atlantic Beach and realized how very much I missed the waves. Good luck finding something. I've been here 13 years and I've come up empty as far as sal****er and the ocean is concerned. Good luck. Donna

Scott, Hello there I grew up always at the beaches on Long Island as well, hubby and I moved upstate (Orange Country) about 2 1/2 years ago and now we live just over the Sullivan County boarder. I also miss the beach, we used to take the Jeep over the beach all the time at Smiths Point in Shirley. I have not found a good place to swim like the beaches of LI but visit the Island when I can and take a ride to the ocean. That is all I can do, living upstate helps us afford more then we could on LI so right now that is more important but I know what you are saying for sure!!! I wish you the best! ~Hugs~ Debra P
