Lisa I am so new to this and just got banded, but I do plan on trying to get pregnant in a year or so...I am thinking closer to 2 years. I would be curious to know someone who was PG with the band!

I am only banded 4 weeks and my OBGYN said yesterday I can get pregnant as soon as the end of the year, begining of next. I am going to ask my surgeon next week. I too am interested in speaking to someone who has gone through it. Is is a realitive normal pregnancy or is it considered high risk -lots of questions! Thanks for your input.

This type of question should be asked to the surgeon. They say a year b/c of the rapid weight loss to prevent complications.

Some bariatric surgery procedures complicate pregnancies because of nutrient inadequacy, Dr. John Dixon and colleagues note in the November issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, leading to lower birth weights. LABG can potentially avoid these problems because the gastric band can be adjusted to adapt to the altered requirements of pregnancy. To test the practicality of this approach, Dr. Dixon's group, based at Monash Medical School in Melbourne, prospectively followed the pregnancies of 79 women who had undergone LAGB surgery, whose bands were adjusted as necessary. Birth outcomes were compared with 40 pregnancies that had occurred prior to surgery, 79 that occurred in matched severely obese control subjects, and with community outcomes (n = 61,000). The amount of weight gained during pregnancy in the LAGB group was lower than in the pre-LAGB group and the severely obese control group (9.6, 14.4 and 15.5 kg, respectively, p < 0.001). The rates of gestational diabetes more closely resembled that of the community controls (6.3% versus 5.5%) than those of the pre-LABG group (15%) and the matched obese cohort (19%). Similar patterns were observed for pregnancy-induced hypertension. Moreover, "neonatal outcomes, including stillbirths, preterm deliveries, low birth weight, and high birth weight, were consistent with community values," Dr. Dixon and his associates report. Thus, they add, "we have demonstrated the nutritional safety and the benefits of adjustability provided by LAGB surgery." Obstet Gynecol 2005;106. HI Lisa. Well no more babies for me (thank God!) but I can give you an OH members name who is currently pregnant. Her name is Robyn (that's exactly how her username is set up). If you do a people search you could talk with her. She's doing fabulously - just found out it's a boy! I do believe another poster was right, they say to wait at least a year, why, I don't know for sure. Contact Robyn, she's very very nice and would help you with questions I'm sure! Karen
