I have posted this on the main board and know that there are some wonderful people here on the NY forum and just wondered if any of you may have an answer for me!!! This is a question I asked my surgeon right after surgery and he did not have an answer for me. Now I am thinking of this again. Does anyone know...If we are malabsorpsive how many calories do we really absorb? How about carbs? Should we be counting every calorie and every carb if we do not absorb all of them? For some reason I cannot get this question answered. Does anyone really know? Shelley

Hi Shelley, From what I have been told, past the honeymoon period (usually the first 6 months), we absorb pretty much all of the calories/carbs in what we eat. The only thing at this point we do not absorb very well is iron/calcium which is greatly absorbed in the first part of the small intestine, duodenum, (in which us bypass patients have 'bypassed' for the rest of our lives.). This is why we have to be careful with our iron and calcium intake.
