Hi Cynthia Sorry to hear that surgery was push back. It is good that they found the ucler and get it treated, instaed of you been operating on and they have to be postpone the surgery. As for the weight gain you came a long way so don't let this upset you and start eating. So take it one day at a time ok we all know it is not easy.I had to be treated for ucler before my surgery and to wait until my treatment was done.So take it easy ok. Cynthia: Sending you (((HUGS))) of support and understanding. Once we make the decision to have WLS we want it last week/month/year! My surgery was rescheduled three times due to a nursing shortage...Although for a different reason than you, I can relate to the feelings/frustration. Now as for the ulcer I know you intellectually realize discovering and treating this preop is both sensible and a blessing because postop it could of been a horrid disaster....but emotionally the wait is very upsetting/unsettling. I am/try to be a very positive person, so in the midst of difficulty lies opportunity, I propose how can you use this difficulty to your ADANTAGE? My other motto is 'change is inevitable struggle is optional'...The only thing constant in life is change...This change in your plans although unwanted is just one more example of this....I BELIEVE you can choose to challenge yourself vs. struggle with this!!! In 8 weeks you can be frustrated/sad/angry and emotionally eat to soothe those emotions OR you can take the time to find balance in your life, looking to ways to deal with the emotions w/o food. Looking to gain knowledge and further education and support for the surgery *you can never now enough or too much!*.... Unfortunately we cannot control the world BUT the good news is we can always control our response to it!!! The choice is yours, work on some coping skills that will be VERY needed postop regardless of surgery for your long-term wellness, wt loss preop... I BET IN 8 WEEKS YOU COULD LOSE 10-15# IF YOU WORK ON IT! USE THE ANGER/DISAPPOINEMTNE/FRUSTRATION TO FUEL THE MOTIVATION! YOU CAN DO IT! Here is my motivational piece on this: WT LOSS BEFORE SURGERY/MOTIVATION/AVOIDING THE LAST SUPPER SYNDROME In our program we are required to loose 10% of our bodywt. before surgery.... Loosing weight first is required by my surgeon for many reasons (I have been told) ... and I am so happy I did! It enabled me to work on some much needed habits and I feel reach an ideal bodywt postop! (*I needed to lose 32# I lost 45# in all my waiting!) 1.. to show motivation, after all it was ALL my surgeon was asking so he could give me the chance at a healthy life! I was worth the effort!!!! 2.. ability to adhere to a plan (as we will need to for life!), if you can't be mindful and able to follow restrictions pre-op how will you do it post-op? The surgery is only a tool, and if not used people can fail wls as well! 3.. to increase your health even a modest 10% wt. loss is very helpful, the National Institute of health has even researched this...(hence why weigh****chers is so focused on the 10% wt loss)and 4.. decreases surgical complications (by exercise and decrease wt your heart and lungs are in better shape for surgery, anesthesia and healing!)... 5.. Also psychologically it is tough going from a supersized big Mac meal to clear liquids for 2 weeks post-op! 6.. It helps shrink the liver and this eases their surgical procedure and decreases chance of nicking it.... 7.. exercising before helps you continue after! I lost the weight by doing the food pyramid. that's it, I was eating so bad (fast food daily, large portions, consuming every highfat/sugar thing imaginable and NOT exercising that just cutting down and walking 2 miles a day helped! For ME, it was "no one" was going to stop me from having this operation, it was my decision and all that was asked of me was to loose 32 lbs, I figured this is a small price for such a wonderful gift I would be given and the opportunity to have a healthier happier longer life....! I was so motivated/psyched, I dropped 30 pounds in 30 days and went on to drop 15 more before surgery!(although this took me 2 months, as it got harder and I had a few last meals, we all do but you can't let this ruin your opportunity!) Exercise was another key, I faithfully walked 2 miles everyday..it helped that my mom went with me allot! (a buddy is so helpful!) I followed the food pyramid given to me by clinical nutritionist Dr. Boham...I also wrote everything down that went in my MOUTH!! Or you can get it at: http://www.xenical.com/hcp/1400_Am_Beye.pdf I also had to remind myself how BAD I wanted this! Everyday it was/had to be more important to me to change my bad habits and loose weight to have this surgery than to continue to slowly kill myself with food/keep myself from the only hope I had!. I also told everyone about my plans and they helped support me, my friends/family and coworkers! I really can't give you any more guidance than this, it really had to come from within, it was a mindset with me, and I wanted this BAD real bad and I knew it was my last resort/chance! I felt invigorated and motivated by the end results...the long-term had to outweigh the short-term gratification of eating bad choices or overeating! It was a learning opportunity for me to change my habits and practice chewing well, not drinking with meals and eating smaller portions! NO LAST SUPPER is needed, I assure you MOST people will be able to eat just about anything (to their dismay) eventually! Join either of these 2 groups http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG_Off_track/ to lurk *you have to be 1 yr out to post but anyone can join!* and learn of the struggles postop after the honeymoon is gone! Learn what to do in the honeymoon when it as easy as it will ever be (6mo +/-), what to work on to change to be successful LONG-TERM! WISHING U WELL EMOTIONALLY AND PHYSICALLY, THE TIME/DATE U HAVE SURGERY WILL BE THE RIGHT TIME!! I REALLY BELEIVE THAT! Hi Cynthia, I hear your disappointment. But an ulcer is nothing to fool around with, especially after this surgery. Trust me on this one. Your MD is smart by correcting it before WLS. If he didnt I would tell you to runnnnn. And about gaining and losing....well duh girl....isnt that the reason we did this surgery cause if we could have controlled it we would have. Obesity is a disease and not a moral issue. If, God forbid, you had a recurrance of cancer woud that be your fault. Listen up girlfriend ....DONT QUIT 5 MINUTES BEFORE THE MIRACLE. Hugs Susan
