Jennifer: Well I am not sure WHY your surgeon says SOY? Although Soy is 'okay', it is not the commonly recommended type. Usually WHEY concentrate, isolate or a blend is recommended...Whey protein does not contain isoflavones or any other components with potential hormonal effects like soy does and the BV is higher w/ whey! Biological Value: Method of rating protein. Biological Value (BV) represents a specific protein's nitrogen retention qualities in humans. BV indicates the amount of nitrogen (body protein in grams) replaceable by 100 grams of protein in the adult diet. The higher the quality of a protein, the higher the BV. Protein BV ~~~~~~~~~~~ Whey 100 Egg 97 Milk 88 Soy 71 Casein 70 Now not telling you to ignore his advice, but maybe seeking a bariatric friendly clinical nutrition MD or registered Dieticians 2cents on this...? After all surgeons are good cutteres! But they dindn't have a lot of nutritional (if any) training!!! Jennifer, you and I both have Dr Graber. IDK, but the nutritionist Dr Graber sent me to specifically said that they recommend both Carb Solutions and GNC Pro Performance. I think it is the lactose that they find is hard for post op patients to tolerate. Actually, she did say that because she said if I wanted to use milk to mix into my drink mixes it could either be Lactaid Fat Free or Soy milk w/ less than 9 grams of sugars per serving. Jamie: Dr. Graber recommends only using the protein drinks for a very short period of time. He said that they find that with their patients soy drinks tend to be the most tolerable. Dr. Graber actually told me that for the short period of time I would be living on protein drinks he had no problem if I just used regular soy milk as a meal supplement. He said most of his patients would be ok like that for such a short period of time. HTH
