Topic: RE: Come on Artist, where are you all ?
I'm an illustrator and graphic designer. I teach too. I paint in nearly every medium and appreciate all kinds of art too. I was producing more pre-op, but I'm a recent post op. I've done mostly digital work lately and need to get back to my oils and acrylics. As far as ideas go my head is like popcorn machine, but that could be my attention deficit just talking lol.
Topic: Help with Oil Painting!
Hi, i was sure this was an oil painting site, but it seems to be a weightloss one as well? anyhow its a nice site, i hope you all dont mind me intruding but i was just wondering, when oil painting, why do u need to add layers? i read somewhere u gotta leave the canvas to dry for 24hrs etc. before starting with the next layer. why cant you just put everything u want on it, on the first go? or do finer details need to be added later etc?
Thanks!

Hi, Try winsor/newton waterless oils, you can get a test set of primary colors for around 20.00. Some of the other brands also have them, grumbacher also has great paints. I almost exclusively use waterless oils now, I used real oil paint for years, not only did I paint on canvas, but it got everywhere. My dogs would brush up against my canvas and it would be all over the house, in my hair, on my rugs etc, etc... When I switched to waterless oil from a sample tube, I was amazed, it cleans up with soap and water, washes out of your clothes and no turpentine, or cleaner smells except to clean up your brushes. I show at the New Braunfels art league regulary, and sell a few things every now and then. I do abstract painting in acrylic and oil and stained glass. Some of my fellow art friends at the gallery, don't like them because of the feel, however I have found that if you thin them just a bit with a brush full of water of waterless linseed oil, they react exactly like real oils and they hold their color great.

Topic: Does your profile reflect who you really are ?
This is a secondary post to the one I just posted but it just came to me. How many of us actually can say our profile backround truly reflects who we are ? Mine now has hearts, red stiletto high heels , sexy curveasuos women and lipsticks. This is how I feel now , sexy, curvy and wanting to put my best look forward. Vickie (a volunteer here) designed it , I told her what I wanted it to express and the color scheme. When she emailed to let me know it was done and I saw it , it was perfect ! So if your profile needs sprucing up , email the volunteers and tell them what your looking for. Their great for doing what they do for no payment ( and because they do so many of these daily it may take some time ) but their work is among some of the best that I've ever seen.

Topic: post-op's, do you find yourself trying different types of paintings now ?
Something happened to me as a post-op that I wasn't even aware of until my younger daughter who is an artist in training ( she's 15) said to me "mom why are you drawing and painting all those nude women ?" It was then that I realized she was not only right but the women were thinner and looked like me now (thinner)! Now as a pre-op I would've never drawn or painted a nude woman because that would've been something that I could've never measured up to or been able to even relate to. Now though I know where the ribs should be showing , how to draw legs and arms with no problem. It's almost like when one art teacher observing my work said to me "no matter what you paint or draw you will always include some part of you into the picture." She was right and these women are me and I'm alright with the nudes I'm painting (minus the extra skin though
Keep drawing and painting friends ! One day it would be great to share a piece of our work with each other just to see our different styles.

Pin-ups sound so cool! I can't do people, not that talented. I am a landscape lover and seascape specialist. I am also contemplating a tattoo when I reach goal. It is a planned reward for me. I am thinking about a small delicate butterfly just above my ankle or on my clavicle. To me it will signify my own metamorphosis. Nice to meet both of you!

A good easel goes a long way toward painting with oils. Decent brushes are also a must. I just "fake" paint. Bob Ross and the like. I do so love it. One-Stroke painting is also enjoyable in acrylics. You can find the stuff you need at any art supply shop and most of it at your local Wally World! It is much cheaper there and as a previous post says you won't have so much invested that if you don't like it you aren't in too deep.

Ms Na Na,
my best advice is to get a student quality paint because if you don't like oils , then you haven't invested alot of money. Pick the primary colors ,titanium white and black. With these you can mix any other color you need. Buy linseed oil for diluting the paint but be aware that the linseed oil can yellow the color after awhile. I use Liquin to mix in my paint , this is great because it dilutes the paint and helps to dry it faster.
Buy a few canvas boards also student grade until you figure out if you like oils or not. Get an art catalog from a company like Pearl Paints, Jerry's Artorama, Dick Blick and do some reading on the products and what they do before you go spending alot of money on things you may never use. Oil painting can be quite expensive so check things out before you start. If you have any other question you can ask ,I'm not an expert at all art products but I've used enough that I know what to buy and what to avoid.
