Last Supper

I was very careful to not have a "bucket list" of food that I felt I needed to ear before doing my optifast. I opted for chinese for my last supper. lol It has always been my favorite and I knew that the rice would be a problem post op for awhile. And yes you will be able to eat out again. It is just very different. Lots of leftovers. As fas as spicy foods. I love them. Prob more now then before. No more heartburn!!!

I had some food funerals, and was rather glad I did.  I had been losing weight prior to Optifast, so these were "planned" carb days.  I was already in the high protein mode, so when I had these meals, I came to realize that I was not really going to miss them at all.  They weren't everything that I had built them up to be in mind.

So now, I'm on the other side, and looking forward to finding new healthy favorites.  I hear the pizza soup is terrific - all the flavours of pizza.

As others have said, its a personal choice whether to say "so long" to some foods.  My farewells only lasted for the meal, then I went right back to my high protein, low carb regime.  There were no guilty feelings involved.

Good luck in your journey.  There is no right or wrong answer to this question, just don't feel guilty or have any regrets.

I had a similar experience.  I have been saying goodbye to a few foods, but have found I really don't enjoy them like I did.  I think it is because I have become so conscious of my food choices lately they just don't appeal to me anymore.  And since I really started paying attention, I just can't overeat, even if I wanted too.

Look at that,  not 20 different answers  just yet but as you can see everyone has delt with it in different ways.

I felt I was lucky as I got the call and had to start the next day no time to think.  At first I was bummed no time to plan but excited that I had gotten my date. I quickly realized too that it was for the best.  I was over thinking it and getting sad over food.  Wondering how I was going to prepare for Opti. Looking back,   I think If I had time I would have overeaten for sure as that was my pattern.

It did not take long for my Opti routine to take over and food to not really be an issue. I liked Opti so that helped too! I will eat what I want, just differently now ( and if my new tummy likes it ) and it is great!!

Been thinking of you ((HUGS))

Sirene, i didnt have a 'last supper', yes i was freer with my food choices in the weeks leading up to optifast, but i tried to eat sensibly. The last thing i ate before starting optifast was a bowl of cereal. and some toast. lol

I tolerate spices just fine, tho i havent had indian food (oh man, i've got to get some, its like 45 minutes away)

the food funeral.. hmm.. not sure what it does signify. The all or nothing thinking is for sure a big part of it. We're all pros at that kind of thing.

I'm learning to give more value to the social aspects of family gatherings, rather than look at them as 'food times' (i have small bites of things that i want to taste, rather than a plateful of it).

so, y eah. not sure, i'm on both sides of the fence about the food funeral.

I was so anxious to start my journey that I was determined not to have the food-fest and have a few extra pounds to loose after surgery.  I had my husband make one of my favourite meals for my "last" supper, homemade chicken parm but I didn't go crazy. I've had it a few times since surgery, I just eat a whole lot fewer noodles.

As for spicy food - I'm a Thai food addict and have it at least once a week.  The only thing that has changed for me is that I only eat a 1/4 of what I used to eat.  My wls girlfriend and I share a meal and still have enough leftover for both of us to leave with enough for another lunch. Four meals for around $10.  I love my RNY.

I can't remember what I had planned for my last supper, but It never happened because I ended up witih pneumonia and couldn't eat anything but soup.  Now I just laugh about the "last supper" I never got to have.  And it didn't kill me obviously.  Now that I'm over a month out and introducing more normal foods, I realize I didn't miss anything.  I can eat just about anything now, so it doesn't matter anymore.  But, I really wanted that last meal!  As for spices, I've popped a few hot things in my mouth with no problems.  Sugar - now that's another thing - I just don't go there.

Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora.  Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.

I'm starting Optifast tomorrow and have been wrestling with this same issue.  To eat or not to eat.   I think I'm more afraid of being hungrier tomorrow if I load up on carbs today, so I've decided to skip having a special last supper.  All the best with whatever you decide.

I was lucky Krista called me with a cancellation and asked me to start the optifast the next day.
I was busy cleaning the house as I am separating from my husband and didn't really have time
to plan so I just had Mcdonald's as my last.
This will be a great start for me new house new me!  I don't know if there will be anyone in my
future but I will have more chance to meet someone with a positive attitude and thinner.

Hello Jennifer, go for your last supper...make it fun.

For me personally, I did do the last supper thing.  I had surgery in 2008, way before all this mandatory Optifast started, but even if it was now, I would still do the last supper before starting on the wls journey.  Family and friends were all very supportive of my decision to have weight loss surgery and were with me every step of the way.  At my request, the weekend prior to surgery, we went out for a Chinese buffet dinner (something we did a lot for family gatherings), and it was great.

It has been 3 years since my surgery and I still attend family/friend functions...dinners, BBQs, you name it, I go to it, I don't miss anything.  Nothing has changed, my life continues on the same as it did before my wls.  I don't feel deprived.  Of course I eat less, but I can take a little of this and a little of that and am completely satisfied.    I have even gone back to the Chinese food buffet and enjoyed myself.

So pick your favourite place to eat and go out and do it up right.  Make it special.  It certainly won't be the last time you will go there, but next time you will be going back a different person, and coming home with half of your dinner in a "to go" container.  That's a perk now...I get two dinners, sometimes three, for the price of one.

Good luck on your journey, and I wish you every success.

Take care...Linda
