Do the surgeons perform a hernia fix during a RNY surgery?
I've asked my weight loss team here in thunder bay a bunch of times and don't seem to have a clear answer.
I'm concerned about having my RNY and having this hernia issue. They say it's a belly button hernia (my button is now and outey when it used to be an innie) but it seems it's much higher and larger. Do they fix this at the same time? I hope not because I'd rather lose weight from the RNY SURGERY and go for the shouldice method.
I'm also concerned about if this hernia seems so big how the hell are they going to do a laparoscopy with all these intestines in the way....lol I guess I'm just a lil worry wart at times.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Those are questions only your surgeon could answer, I would think.

Your stomach organ is nowhere near your belly button so can't see how it would get in the way. Most surgeons prefer to wait until you lose weight to fix any hernias so you should be safe to wait but that will be your surgeon's call. Good question for him/her when you do finally meet them.
You should definitely address it AGAIN with your surgical team.
My friend Donna had both her gallbladder and her hernia fixed while they were "in there", because they were both acute.
That is the main concern they would have, I think - the surgeons really don't care about your recovery period. That's up to the rest of the clinical folks, to ensure you recover okay.
The Shouldice method works well for some hernias, but an umbilical hernia can be very large and intrusive - you should definitely (especially if it's acute) discuss it with them again.
It may be best to have it done right away ...

I had surgery in July at St Joe's in Hamilton with Dr Anvari and he was excellent. I had a very large hernia and he also did the repair for that at the same time. I would ask your centre to check with the hospital in case there are other tests that need to be done prior to surgery. Or maybe you could call Christa or the nurse and have them find out for you.
