NSV - playing hockey????

So, I am really nothing like an "athelete" by any stretch of the imagination. I am uncoordinated and pretty much the clumsiest person on the planet. I LOVE doing active things, but only because its fun, certainly not because I am good at it!!

I havent played any sort of "sport" since high school.....20+ years ago!! Yesterday, I had a whole day of errands planned and my honey, who used to play hockey semi-professionally, asked me to go play on the ice with him.

I was terrified!!!

What if I fall? I cant hold a stick and skate! My feet hurt everytime I put on skates! I am gonna look like an idiot out here! Last time I was on skates, some kid knocked me over and I cried!

Well....in an effort to be supportive of my honey, who is trying to quit smoking and fairly miserable these last few days, I decided to go.....

OMG I HAD SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!

I bought myself a pair of snowpants (thanks Janet) and a couple of cheap hockey sticks for everyone and away we went. It was outdoor rink and not too cold, just perfect winter weather.

I managed to stay on my feet MOST of the time, and when I did fall, I took a line from a Chili Peppers song and completed the motion when I stumbled.....totally spreadeagled out across the ice!!! LOL!! Then??.....I LAUGHED!!!!

It was literally awesome, and one of the best days of my life!! I felt so friggin good that I managed to skate circles around my honey, stay up on my skates for as much as I did and even scored a goal or two!! I didnt even care who was watching!!! The only reason we eneded up coming home was because my toes were frozen-numb!

I think this is the first time that I can honestly say that I love my RNY :)
Thank you!

Terrific NSV, Jennifer!  I'm afraid to try skating, partly because I haven't done it in 20 years and was horrible at it back then, and partly because I have bad knees and am afraid to fall.  Maybe your experience will inspire me...

Last time I went skating (20+ years ago), a kid bumped into and i fell and HE cried....I landed on him.  lol

I've just been invited to a skating/birthday party next week... you will be my inspiration.  (now I gotta find skates).

Way to go!

Oh Jennifer - your post brought tears to my eyes!  I would really love to be able to skate - people look so free when they're gliding around the ice.  I have strong memories of my parents holding hands and skating together.  Sadly, I was the fat kid with duck feet that would never fit in those narrow white figure skates from the past.  My daughters are both hockey players and I've always wanted to join them on the ice (hubby is pretty much a non-skater like myself) ... maybe we could take it up together!  Thanks for the inspiration, Sandy P.

Jennifer, I am so happy for you!! I'm having a bad day - my 11 year old son is giving me a rough time and I am just generally feeling down, but your post actually made me smile. I had been sitting here all teary-eyed feeling miserable, but reading your post, just the vision of it, and thinking "wow I hope someday that will be me out there having fun", cheered me up. I used to love playing outside and I haven't skated in years. I have no athletic ability either - I come from a family of tall people with big feet and no coordination -  but hubby is a former semi-pro hockey player and I know he'd love it if I joined him for a skate! Last time I tried, about 5 years ago, my ankles were excrutiatingly sore within a few minutes and I was so afraid of falling (had a bad fall about 15 years ago), I just gave up, but I have always wanted to get back out there.

Anyway, glad you're having fun!! You go girl !!!!

Dont get me wrong Sandy and Diana....I fell...a few times...and hard!!! My knee is still a bit bruised actually but I just got right back up again!

And actually, I was laying on the ice for a few extra minutes thinking, how the heck do I get up on skates??? Then I remembered when my son was taking lessons and they said to put your weight on your knee and get up. At first I thought...ya right!!. But I was able to do it!!!

I was totally amazed at what my body was able to do. You will be too!!! I guess the key is you just have to try!!
