I believe she meant you referring to them as guardian angel not just angel. The term used around here is angel. I chuckled when I saw you call them a guardian angel as well. 
As for your original question, I never had one and even if I were to have surgery today, I'd likely not have one. I am not much of a hand holder nor do I need my hand held so for me it would be futile. I know some people are really nervous before surgery and they get a lot out of having an angel to talk to about stuff one on one. I ask stuff to the whole board and am very seldom nervous about anything. As for updating the rest of us, many do so right from their hospital bed so it's your choice.

What is an angel? An angel is someone who is in contact with your family/friend the day of your surgery and posts on the forum to let us all know how you're doing. Additionally, an angel can be somewhat of a "mentor" to you - offering more personal support, advice and guidance. They don't have to live close to you - it's simply someone you have "connected with" here on the forum. If you would like to have an angel, please ask someone you feel close to or check the angel list for volunteers!
