Exercise and Calories
So, i'm on maintenance, but as many of you know, I would like to lose a few pesky pounds, because I just want to see a certain number.
With that said, I have upped my protein by adding protein coffee to my mornings. What I haven't done, and am frankly, afraid to do, is eat more to make up for the calories burned during my workouts. Although I can do it very healthily, it sounds like a slippery slope to me.
But....is it possible that the pounds are hanging on because I don't eat the calories burned?
For instance, today my totals before exercise will be about 1,000 calories. However, I will be burning about 350 calories in my spinning class. When you plug that into a program like MyFitness Pal, it minuses those calories, (net calories), therefore needing to eat more. So my net calories for the day end up being 650. Which, of course, on their own at 18 months post-surgery, is not enough, I realize that.
Any imput?

I am a firm believer that you have to eat "enough" to lose....also to ensure you don't mess with your metabolism
Why don't you try increasing your calories - especially on exercise days?
I also think its good to vary your intake.....don't stick to the same number of calories daily.....some days to 1500....next day to 900.....day after to 1200....you get the picture....
Keep your body in suspense....
During my rapid losing phase....I varied my calories - post 6 months - to ensure I would be able to eat enough calories in maintenance .....I didn't want my body to get used to surviving on 1000 calories per day.....
I am still doing this as I lose my regain....down 9 pounds in roughly 8 weeks....a half or full pound a week is very do-able while eating enough for sustenance and pleasure....
When I was just maintaining....I ate 1500 - 1800 per day without gaining.....( I went over this amount for 3 or 4 months and gained rapidly)....I am fairly active....not as much as you and I am older.....but I do believe I was able to eat these amounts and maintain because I varied and ate enough during my weight loss stage
I have nothing scientific to back this.....just had a long time vet tell me this....and it made sense to me...
Good luck Kelly

Actually, I do remember back in the day when I was on WW doing that kind of formula as well. And it worked. But to be honest, I didn't know if that sort of playing around iwth the metabolism worked after WLS.

i don't know about the calories... i dont know if the slippery slope thing is true.
about "seeing a certain number", numbers are numbers. I think that it would be healthier to work toward a "number range", rather than a specific number, you can drive yourself nuts doing that.
omg i'm 136 today, yesterday i was 135, now i'm 137 ahhhhhh!!!!
no good.
oh yes, i'm between 135 and 140 = peace....

It just makes me sad that I have sat at 97 pounds lost....three pounds from 100. I go between 134-139. But never break the 134. I HATE that i'm like this.
Somehow, I have it in my head that if I see 131, then i'll be satisfied.
I probably won't. And that is as honest as I can get.

You, my friend, just quoted my therapist!! LOL. He says that because i'm so aware of my problems, and that i'm willing to talk them through so openly is a very HUGE step towards a healthier place. I will get there, I know it.
Thanks for the hugs!

I find that people always find a way to conserve energy, and also that fat people don't burn as much. Totally annecdotal.
Although I currently hate the stuff, I think a container of SF applesauce is enough to satisfy thirst and give one a little extra sugar boost before a class. Then jus****er after and enjoy it. Usually exercise (before) took away my appetite.

As a hypoglycemic, I can't have a sugar boost like that.
Exercise does take away my appetite, but that's not the issue i'm trying to get advice on. It's am I getting enough calories at this point?

Why don't you try it and see? You are eating, and you can easily eat more if you feel bad.
