Low blood sugar -what the heck happened

I was walking home from work today, and at about 2km in, I started feeling kind of strange. Started sweating, but I thought it was just another hot flash. I noticed myself slowing down considerably, and felt somewhat lightheaded, and my stomach felt a bit off. I finally made it home, and barely made it to the bathroom. I checked my sugars, and it was 2.6. I know that's low. Had a snack and felt better quickly. Not sure why this happened. I haven't taken diabetic meds since surgery day, and my sugars hover in the 5-6 range in the mornings, which is the only time I test (usually once a week). I did eat my lunch at coffee time today, then had some cheese at around 1:00. After that I walked home, and was driven back after lunch. This happened on my walk home after work. Distance is approximately 3km each way. Any ideas?

Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora.  Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.

Did you have lots of carbs for lunch? What time did you walk home? If it was in the 1-3 hour range I'd say it was RH. http://diminishingdawnreturns.blogspot.ca/2011/04/reactive-hypoglycemia.html?m=1

If not, I'd say it was General hypo and you need to eat before you walk Carb plus protein

I had steak, bit of potato and corn at around 10:30. Had some cheese close to 1:00, then walked home. Had 2 licorice around 3:15(bad, I know) then walked home at 4:00. Would the licorice have something to do with it? It was just a very strange occurrence for me. I find myself hungrier in the morning, then I don't eat much in the afternoon until supper.

Silly question what kind of licorice? Twiizzlers? Pull and peel? Red black?

I would venture that it was the release of insulin to combat the sugar spike plus the exercise in addition that created the low. I almost passed out at Walmart during the summer because of damned licorice!

18 carbs in 2. Pure sugar. Usually anything over 25 is in the be careful range but your exercise probably would have exacerbated it.

I am so ignorant of the science behind these things. Licorice is now on the very naughtylist, along with mice cream. I must say that I don't pay too much attention to things anymore, I just eat my small amounts and rarely react to anything. Must become more focussed. Thanks for the info.

Why don't you call the Clinic?  The last time I felt like that it was because my blood pressure was low and I needed an adjustment in my thyroid medication.  You've had surgery a while ago and have done  so well.  I'd tend to ask for some bloodwork  or a follow up?  I hope that this is an isolated occurence.

Take care.

The number of her blood sugar confirmed it.  That's a dangerous number.

Calling the centre is always good but the number shows the problem is low bloodsugar.  I've been living with it for a long time
