Advice for post bowel surgery

awww, hugs, Kelly. I've never had bowel surgery, so i can't say anything from personal experience, but as a nurse (not a surgical one) i know that It can take a while for your bowel to get back to normal after surgery. It's been incredibly insulted and traumatized, for sure. Nausea can be a signal of constipation, your bowels filling up. are you distended at all? are you passing gas?

Go to your family doc or emerg if you don't hear from your surgeon today. and keep us posted, please

Kelly did they actually cut your bowel or just clean up around it ?  My mom has had her bowel resected a few times due to Crohn's and it would take a week or so for her bowel to start working more normal. If they just cleaned up around it then I've had that done and it didn't affect my bowel at all.  I had tons of adhesions removed but didn't have the omentm wrapped around it. Maybe you aren't feeling well because of the food you are eating.  You are used to way more protein and maybe all the crackers and toast is just too many carbs and almost putting you in a carb coma.  Not sure if you can get any protein shake in you but maybe try sipping on it all day to up the protein and reduce the carbs.

I finally just went to the bathroom! Yay! I resorted to what I could actually stomach. I have been sipping one protein shake daily....a couple of sips, any more and I would be dry-heaving. I'm sipping one now, and it's going down much better. So things are looking up. I think i'm just used to bouncing back that this took me by surprise.

As far as what happened in my surgery, it's a bit of a mystery. In the recovery room they told me that I had a partial obstruction from a hernia, and they cut the bowel and repaired it. Then the next day I was told about the omentum being wrapped around and strangling the bowel, which caused the obstruction and that I didn't have a hernia....as they had suspected. They said there were a lot of adhesions and I think they said they cut away the omentum and some adhesions, but not the bowel. I say I think, because I was still hopped up on morphine. I said as much, because I wanted what they were saying to be written down. The resident said all would be said on my patient's letter.

My patient's letter said I had diagnostic laparoscopy, reduction of internal hernia. To me, the patient's letter looks like it was written before the actual outcome of what they found.

Anyhow, i'm pretty sure i'm on the mend, and as Monica said, nausea is a sign of constipation, so now things are moving maybe i'll be less nauseous.
