Hey there! I too called Dr. Patterson's office and got signed up for the mandatory meeting. Mine isn't until September tho. The only thing that struck me as a little odd was that I got this information packet almost strictly about lap banding.. and wondered why that had so much emphasis placed on it?? Anyone have any clues? Overall I haven't heard many really great revues on Banding. Christa
I called for information from Dr. Patterson as well. I was less than happy about having to go to a mandatory meeting with a bunch of other people. I wanted personal, one-on-one attention with my surgeon from the very beginning. I chose Dr. Friedman whose office is at Providence Hospital. He performs the surgery at Good Sam. I am having the RNY gastric bypass. I am still awaiting approval from insurance....but hope to have the surgery in Sept.

 Keri,
Dr. Patterson is an excellent laparoscopic surgeon....
I was in her pre-op program for the DS a couple of years ago - when I met with her one-on-one she told me I was too fat for the DS, and that she would only do the lap band for me, and then maybe a couple of years down the road we'd consider a revision to the DS.
There were a number of issues with her stance on WLS, MO, as well as the protocols that she does the various WLS procedures and I did not feel good about proceeding with her as my surgeon.
I was never more thrilled when my insurance denied me (twice) and I ended up going the self-pay route and having my surgery with Dr. Baltasar in Spain.
If I needed a routine laparoscopic procedure performed - I'd choose Patterson hands-down. As it stands, I know several of her post-ops who have been very dissatisfied with their long-term results, several of whom have had revisional surgeries to different WLS procedures.
My best advice to you is to dig in, do your research, personally talk with her post-ops and find out what their quality of life is, ask her for her stats on mortality and complications, compare all of the procedures - and make an informed decision.
Blessings,
dina
