Thought I would post a transcript of a letter to the editor that appeared in today's newspaper, Eugene Register Guard. "I have discovered the solution to the nation's obesity problem. Considering the cost of maintaining prisoners in our correctional facilities, It would be cost effective to remove the ones who are guilty of nothing more major that smoking a recreational mood alterer. In their place, we should put willing Americans into their vacated cells where they no longer have to be concerned about depriving themselves in order to lose the unhealthy weight. The wardens can be responsible for their deprivation. They could be given exercises prescribed by the prison's medical staff as well as meals recommended by said staff. These obese citizens could sign on until they reach their desired weight. Even if there would be some recidivism, it would still be so much less costly than tending to the results of being grossly obese. " This letter was signed by Bella Barnett of Eugene. My husband looked for her name in the phone book tonight but it wasn't listed. I contend she is facing a drug charge and will use this as her reason to stay out of jail. Some people! Kathy W.

well that confirms what I have always felt. it's much better in society's eyes to be a freaken "drug" addict then it is to be a "food" addict... and why not.. they can keep there addiction hidden for the most part. of course until the end up in JAIL for mugging 90 year old ladies to get there next fix.. I personaly know a lot of druggies (not proud of that by any means but family is family) and let me say that not one of them have ended up in jail for " USING A RECREATIONAL MOOD ALTERING DRUG"... no it was there actions in trying to GET MORE DRUGS... have any of you ever known of a fat person holding up a 7-11 to get a mt. dew and a twinkie?????????????????????????? or shooting innocent babies in a drive by because the local store couldn't get there shipment of chocolate??? this is a subject that just ****** me off to no end. well to "BELLA" smoke up dear girl cuz you aint got any brain cells left anyway!!! and after YEARS of "the munchies" maybe you'll really figure out what it's like to be JUDGED.... ok I know someone is going to slam me for saying this but........ let me ad that I think pot should be legalized not only for medicinal purposes but for recreational as well... (not just POT but ALL DRUGS) if it would save one baby/child from dying in a freaken drive by then I could care less how many ADULTS overdose on the crap. Theresa

Wow, and I thought Dr. Phil had all the answers! Bella needs to be mugged by a group of fat ladies...I'd like to volunteer! And I agree with you, Theresa, that adults should be allowed to be responsible for their drug use. I'm only against crack cocaine because kids can buy it (it's cheap) and it's incredibly dangerous. Other than that, who cares??? I'm shocked by not only Bella writing in, but that the Register Guard printed it. Shame on them all. -Lesa in Portland
