Hi Linda,

In the 10 plus years I spent in the insurance industry, I've never come across a policy that covers a Medical Alert ID. Normally, the only non-service type of expense that they would cover is for Durable Medical Equipment and these ID's don't fall into that category. By all means though, give your insurance company a call to check on it. I could very well be wrong and you never know but maybe there's an exception on your policy which would then in fact cover it.

For anyone that has a Flexible Spending Account or other type of medical savings plan, these ID's are considered an eligible expense and you can be reimbursed for it (this is also an indication that it's not covered under the medical insurance plan). You normally don't need to provide proof of medical necessity so you shouldn't have to jump through hoops trying to get reimbursed.

I found this site that starts at $24.95 with no charge for engraving.  It is from the paper I got at the doc.

Those places in the middle of most malls that do engraving usually have them really cheap.

I got mine at Medicalert.org.   For a reasonable annual membership fee, they will keep a database with all of your medical information for the ER to get via your code on your bracelet, which also says, "Gastric Bypass, do not blindly place NG tube.  Use endoscopy."  Then it has my code and a toll free number.  I fill in the database with my medical history, my family doctor's phone number and my family's emergency phone numbers.  I think the annual fee is about $50.  My bracelet cost about $14, which I just replace because my old one was getting worn down and was hard to read.  I think it is worth the fee to have my medical history, including doctor's information in the database so the ER can access it.

Check out their website.  I got my bracelet in less than a week after I ordered it.

Hope it helps.
