Topic: RE: PCOS -- METFORMIN- WEIGHT LOSS
Met. worked the opposite for me! I was put on met. by a fertility specialist in Mexico that had helped to get 3 of my husbands family members pregnant. Since we only got once a year (twice if I'm lucky) we went ahead and bought a years worth of the Met. and folic acid that he put me on. Down in Mexico you can buy your meds from the pharmacy or straight from the dr.(for those that may not know, the meds are all packed in sealed bubble packs or sealed bottles) Anyhow, I bought the pills from the Dr. I took them just as he told me, and in the next 4 months I gained 60lbs! I continued to take them but when I really started seeing the weight on me I quit taking them both. I couldn't figure out what else was causing such a drastic weight gain. By the time we went back to Mexico the next year I had gain a total of 100 lbs! Mind you- I was heavy for all my life and weighed within 20 lbs of 275lbs from when I was about 15 to 25-26 years old, when I started taking the Met. I'm assuming it may have been where I got it or something cause I know not ALL med are safe in Mex. you could get a bad batch or something. Needless to say, I DO NOT take any more meds from down there,(except Tylenol and cold meds- the got the best stuff)
Oh yeah and the whole time I was taking the meds I never once got my period! Then last year my coworker was talking about how she was taking Met for PCOS and after I told her my story she said I should take some of hers. I know its a no no but I did it and in just 2 days I got my period!! I couldn't believe they would work that fast. But after not having it for almost 15 months(not since the Mexican Dr. gave me a shot to force me to have a cycle) I though that would be one crazy coincidence!
Anyways- its kinda OT but I always like to warn people when they talk about Met. because to this day IDK if it was the pills or my body didn't agree with, that form of treatment.

I'm revising to the DS. I've been on the revision board for a while and I've never seen anyone revising FROM the DS to anything else, but people w/Band, sleeve, rny, etc are all revising TO the DS so...count me in :)

Oh how frustrating! I'm sorry! :( I'm really hoping that my revision surgery will help me lose weight so that my PCOS can take a break for a while. That's so odd that you were back on track and then out of no where it stopped again. I was hoping someone who could relate more would answer because I'm very curious to see if more people have this issue also.
Good luck...and sorry! :(

Topic: RE: Need some advice... Thank you
First of all, congratulations on your weight loss thus far :) that's super awesome!!
Second, I'm very similar to your story...healthy follicles and what not, but still very irregular periods.
When I was tracking my BBT, it was normal for the temps to drop pretty low. From my understanding it is that drop in temp right before a sudden spike in temp that means that you've ovulated. I'm not 100% on that, it's been a couple years since I've done it.
I am going to be revising to the DS from an un-successful lap-band so I'm not sure how my PCOS will effect my weight loss. I do know that my PCOS has hugely effected all natural, non-surgical attempts of weight loss...i.e...I never lost any! lol!
I wish you the best of luck and hope that you get someone more knowledgeable to answer your post. Wish I could be of more help.

Topic: RE: RNY slow or no weight loss with PCOS
Thanks Everyone for your input!
Kara: I have the thought that you did about my calorie intake not being enough to explain the weight that I carry around (380 highest) and it definitely don't explain my 100 lb weight gain in less than one year! I know I'm far from a post WLS diet but I usually eat less than half of whatever I serve my husband, plus we rarely do to fast food and what not, ALOT less often than when I was a single woman. I know I would be a chubby girl by the way I eat but definitely not almost 400lbs!
Oh well I've completed all the requirements and have my date, I guess I can try it and see what happens. I've tried everything else. Plus seeing and hearing all the positive stories for all the PCOSers on here is really encouraging!

Thanks for all your answers I was wondering about this too!
Topic: RE: RNY slow or no weight loss with PCOS
I had RNY on 2/25/2010. I lost 32 lbs. before surgery and 12 lbs. the first 2 weeks after surgery. However, as soon as I advanced my diet to add "crispy and crunchy" things like kashi cereal mixed with yogurt, crackers with tuna salad on them, milk with protein drinks, apple with pb, etc. -- very healthy options the dietician suggested -- my weight loss completely fell off. I only lost 5 lbs. over the next 5 weeks. No matter what I did, my weight loss did not come back.
I eliminated anything that would be considered carbohydrate based and my weight loss has miraculously started up again. The dietician I am working with says she has never encountered someone who is so carb sensitive.
I am still quite early from surgery -- just under 8 weeks. But I know my body and I was someone with PCOS who did not eat enough calories to sustain my body weigh. I had RNY because I hoped it would give me positive metabolic results along with weight loss.
At this point I'm on the fence. I did stop metformin about 3 days before surgery. In hindsight, I don't know if this was the best tactic.
I don't know that anyone has a really good idea of the metabolic impact of this surgery for some. I haven't found a lot of knowledge or support from my surgeon and staff.

Topic: RE: PCOS -- METFORMIN- WEIGHT LOSS
Metformin does help with weight loss. It does this through several mechanisms but the primary one is that it increases muscle cells sensitivity to insulin. The insulin resistance you had was contributing to weight gain and the metformin helps to reverse that. Metformin works best when you are on a low carb diet. I am sure your eating better and being mindful of your health is a major contributing factor to your weight loss as well. Generally the weight loss with the metformin will happen during the first 3 months, after that your body somewhat regulates.
