Topic: RE: Pcos and Pregnacy
Just thought I'd share my story with ya.. to give a little hope.
At 16 I was told I had PCOS and I had to go on BC just to regulate me enough to have normal periods.. at 19 I got pregnant and the Dr told me that my son was my miracle baby and to enjoy every min with him because the likley hood of me getting preg again would be almost impossible due to my weight and the PCOS.. In 2006 I decided I wasnt going to live like this anymore and I was going to have the LapBand surgery and what a success as I had lost about 98 lbs as of 2008 and got my son off to college and was ready to focus on the remainder of my goal.
In 2008 my brother had a stroke at 42 and it scared the dickens out of me, a few months later I was getting this numbness in my hands and I had no idea what was causing it I went to the Dr thinking I was going to end up like my brother and I demanded they do some test to find out why they were going numb.. He called me back 2 days later and told me that he had some good and even beter than good news ... I was thinking what can be good I'm having painful numbness in my hands at night.. He said well good news is your not having a stroke and the even better news is your 6mths pregnant. I DROPPED THE PHONE.
I now have a 20 yr old son in college and a beautiful 14mth old girl. Talk about starting your life over..But I wouldnt change a thing..
You do whats best for you and your health and you will be rewarded for that in many ways..
GOD BLESS and Good Luck

Topic: RE: PCOSers who had WLS, did you take Metformin to get pg/during pregnancy after WLS?
The reason PCOS has such a high rate of miscarriage is due to the high levels of insulin creating a toxic environment so to speak for the developing fetus. Same reason it make it difficult to get pregnant even if you are having periods and ovulating. I have not had my surgery yet but I did take Metformin to to help me get pregnant in the past. I took it the entire pregnancy. I am a nurse and not a doctor but from my research it seems that yes we are always at risk for insulin resistance due to PCOS. The problem is knowing which came first PCOS and then insulin resistance of vice versus. If you have lost weight and don't have any other symptoms of PCOS then you may not have high levels of insulin at this time. Yes, we are always at risk. I would recommend talking to your OB about seeing a reproductive endocrinologist for his opinion. They can always do a fasting glucose and insulin test to see how your body is responding and what your insulin levels are. You may not need the the Metformin especially with the DS. I think seeing a reproductive endocrinologist would give you the best in sight as to how to approach pregancy and what you need to do to maintain once pregnant. I am in the process of being worked up for surgery. If pregnancy comes about for me again, I believe that is how I would approach it. I hope this helps.
Topic: RE: metformin question
Not very surprising to hear... I was diagnosed with PCOS at 12 yrs old and my docs at that time called it Pre-diabetes.... hence the main reason for the diabetic medicine. I don't think (i could be wrong) that she was saying you are a diabetic, but given the nature of pcos , what it does and what it leads to if the conditions worsen or remain untreated , some dr's should look at pcos pt's as diabetic cases.
PCOS isnt so much a CAUSE of diabetes, but more of a precursor to diabetes. The true cause of pcos is a combination of one or more things- genetics, environmental and exercise and eating habits. PCOS is just a signal that let's you know "hey, if left uncontrolled or if you dont change diet and exercise habits, you can very well get diabetes". I'm not taling to you personally when I say that, but I do think thats what yourr dr may be trying to imply. PCOS takes some looking over, treatment and care for to keep symptoms and conditions at bay to help avoid getting true type 2 diabetes in the future.
Many may reply and disagree with what I'm saying , but this is just my case and a condition that "I" have been dealing with since I was a litle girl. So as a disclaimer I must say "every case of PCOS is different."

Topic: metformin question
ok so i went to a new gyn. last week and i informed her that im already on metformin which they (primary care dr.) just increased. Prior to going to her my periods were m.i.a so she put me on provera. She said that in my case there was a recent study that showed pcos being a cause of diabetes. Since im already on metformin she state that my pcos is a diabetic case...i was shocked...has anybody heard of this?
Topic: RE: PCOSers who had WLS, did you take Metformin to get pg/during pregnancy after WLS?
Hi Rainy, I hope I can be of help.... I did go back on metformin when I was ttc, and I got pregnant that very first cycle. But I also took femara due to having PCOS. Even after shedding 240lbs, I could tell my pcos was sneaking back up on me. But I am 15 weekspregnant now. I started weaning myself off the met between my 6th and 7th week and I've been fine so far.
I was actually on Metformin extended release , which my RE felt was better than regular Metformin. One day, when I was about 12 weeks, I started getting scared about whether I would officially make it out of my first trimester, so I did try to take my metformin one more time- and I felt like it was wrong for "ME". And I didnt take it another day.
SO I'm defintiely for it when ttc, but once you're near the end of your first trimester, I'd advise feeling out your own body and ur little one when deciding when to get off the met.

Topic: RE: anyone experience with provera?
I was on it for a while. I used to take something to make me start bleeding and something else to make me stop bleeding. One of those was provera.
i've been on Nuva-ring for 2 years now and it's the best thing I've found for me

Topic: RE: What is Wrong with Me?
Hello,
I too have the same problem, the sharp pain that seems to come the same time every month. I have started tracking it, so that I can see how it comes in relation to my period. My PCP told me it could be the "middle pain", and sent me to get an ultrasound, which came back "essentially normal". So they sent me to my VSG surgeon, saying that it couldn't be an ovarian thing. :o ( I started BC, and I think the pain has gotten better, but I too expected it to go away, thinking no ovulation=no pain, right? (the last post about endometriosis has me thinking...)
The only other option I have to explain my pain is a hernia. When I had my gallbladder out in May, they found a hernia in the same area, and it does hurt when I cough and do sit-ups (which the surgeon made me think it could be a hernia when I was convinced it was ovarian). The pain isn't strong enough most of the time that I think I need to have the hernia repaired, but if it gets worse, I will have surgery #3, and maybe then they can check for endometriosis as well.
Just another option for you to ask about. But everyone is right, you need to keep pushing and pushing until you are satisfied. Don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion, or third! You are the only one who cares as much about you, don't forget that.

Topic: RE: Has anyone had DS approved by BCBS for PCOS?
Hi Jane,
I have BCBS HMO of IL and I fought my plan for 13 months to approve my RNY.
I was 270 pounds when I began the process, had PCOS, thyroid problem ..and by the time of my surgery I was 296 pounds, so my BMI was way over 50..
I can tell you one thing...DONT give up. I had to hire a legal help. They were great and helped me beat that HMO. I had my surgery on 11/23/09.
If you want I can give you their contacts.
