Topic: RE: What's the worst side effect of PCOS???

For me, the worst s/e of PCOS has been being super subfertile. I have one beautiful daughter conceived with Met and Clomid, and I will truly be OK if she is an only child, but I'd like to just be able to get pregnant without timing or meds or overthinking it!

Topic: PCOSers who had WLS, did you take Metformin to get pg/during pregnancy after WLS?

I quit Met when I got my DS and my periods are regular and PCOS doesn't seem to be rearing its ugly head. But I remember bleak stats about PCOS and miscarriage from when I was TTC my daughter 5 years ago - something like 50% m/c rate for PCOS women not on Metformin, and a normal rate for those who took it. I stayed on Met the whole time I was pregnant and breastfeeding.
If you've gotten pregnant since WLS, did you use Metformin during TTC or during your pregnancy?

Topic: RE: Has anyone had DS approved by BCBS for PCOS?

I have a friend on this board who started with a BMI under 50 and got BCBS of Minnesota to pay (if I remember correctly.) Her ID is Diamond Girl and I know her IRL, she's a sweetie. I think she had co-morbidities and not sure if she had PCOS, but try PMing her. She will definitely know more about the DS and BCBS than I do!
I have PCOS and I'm very happy with my DS. I have not set any records for weight loss but I'm certainly a lot healthier and better off than I was pre-surgery. My periods have been regular since surgery, but the true test for me will be if I can get pregnant without heroic methods. I'm not TTC yet so I have no idea. My endo said WLS would "cure" my PCOS and I think she is right that it has put my major symptoms into remission, but AFAIK PCOS is a lifelong thing and not necessarily curable.
If I were you I'd cross-post this on the DS board. There are a lot of great people there who will be helpful.

Sorry to hear that! I was hoping the DS was better for PCOS.
Topic: RE: Has anyone had DS approved by BCBS for PCOS?
i have no experience with BCBS but i had to say: i have never heard of anyone being approved JUST because of PCOS and i am living proof that WLS, even the DS, is no guarantee that you will be rid of the PCOS. mine "disappeared" for the first 7 months after surgery and then suddenly it was back worse than it ever was before.

Dunia, never give up hope completely.
After almost 20 years suffering with PCOS and Endometriosis and having three surgeries for cysts, being told I was infertile and having a hysterectomy looming in the very near future....
... at 34 I had a perfect miracle little girl. Naturally!
The only complication being that she was 2 weeks overdue because the surgeries and cysts had completely scarred over my cervix and it wouldn't dilate... causing a csection.
Chin up hon!!
Second to the infertility symptom, for me it was the cramps that made me pass out on the toilet.

Topic: RE: What is Wrong with Me?
Hello,
Like everyone else has said you should be followed by your GYN and PCP. I have had pain in the past that sounds similiar. Certain positions, intercourse, and certain times of the month all varied the pain. I too had all the scans and ultrasounds and nothing was seen. My GYN then suggested that I possibly had endometriosis. Endometreosis is where the endometrium - the lining of the uterus- grows in area outside of the uterus. However, unlike the normal endometrium inside the uterus it is not able to go through the process of our monthly cycle and slough off. Therefore, these areas outside of the uterus begin to grow and become painful. Endometriosis cannot be seen on a scan. I had to under go a laporscopic exploratory procedure to determine if that was the problem and then the areas were removed at the same time. They can come back. I am also on the pill and have been for a long time. Being on the pill does control your period and will help but will not necessarily prevent it. Sometimes endometriosis can affect your ability to get pregnant if you have excessive areas around your fallopian tubes for instance. However, the ironic thing is that the pain improves during pregnancy since you are not having a period. This may not be you, but the way you described your symptoms sounded similiar. As far as pregnancy I was able to get pregnant after my surgery. They usually say that you want to try and get pregnant close to the time the areas are removed to improve your ability to conceive. I have had some fertility issues but that was more related to further weight gain in subsequent pregnancies and PCOS. Hope this helps. Best wishes on finding an answer.

Topic: Has anyone had DS approved by BCBS for PCOS?
I have BCBS of AL. My plan requires you to have a BMI of 50 or over to get DS. I haven't found a dr in AL that gives DS. I have found one across the border in GA that is closer than any other WLS in AL. So, I have a couple of questions for you.
1.) Has anyone been approved for DS due to PCOS if you have a BMI under 50?
2.) Has anyone been able to get BCBS to play for an out of network surgeon if there is no in network surgeons that give the surgery?
Thanks in advance for any feedback!
