Like you, my reasoning for wanting WLS is because 1) I was having health problems secondary to obesity that a normal 32-year-old shouldn't be having (including PCOS), 2) because of the obesity, I was advised to not try to conceive until I lost weight due to the risks to both me and the fetus, and 3) I wanted nothing more than to be a mom.

PCOS is not just a reproductive issue, it is also a metabolic and endocrine disorder.  Weight loss can significantly relieve many of your PCOS symtpoms, but it doesn't necessarily guarantee they will go away.  There are many many normal weight (i.e. "thin") women who suffer from PCOS.

I am 18 months post RNY and trying to conceive.  I'll be starting on my first round of Clomid tomorrow.  I know that I ovulate occasionally, but because we're not sure that I ovulate every month, my fertility doc has decided to try Clomid and timed intercourse a few times before considering IUI.

There is a wonderful message board out there www.soulcysters.net specifically for PCOS.  I have found TONS of information about PCOS there and have learned things I didn't know already.  Go there and read read read.  They have TONS of articles posted.

The hormonal changes from the weight loss can certainly be causing the period issues.  But you should check in with whoever you see for your female issues (either your ob/gym or family doctor) so they know what is going on.

I am a wee bit concerned though that you were taking contraceptives to control the PCOS.  All that will do is take care of the reproductive aspects of PCOS.  PCOS is actually a metabolic/endocrine disorder and contraceptives will do nothing for that. http://www.infertilityphysician.com/androgen/pcos.html

Has there been anything else you've been doing for the PCOS?

I am 18 months post RNY and only at 95 lbs lost.  Very frustrating.  Knowing that PCOS is a metabolic and endocrine disorder does help me feel that I'm not a failure at this.  I am starting a liquid protein train for the next 5 days to detox and decarb myself.  I am TTC and know that in order to fight this IR monster, I am going to have to cut carbs down to a bare minimum.  So I'm recommitting myself to that.

i am still pre-op but i feel like i have something to add to this.

i have pcos and also tried the clomid and metformin games. we tried birth control pills and a couple folk remedies and yes even some 'witchcraft'. lol i finally did get pregnant and had a beautiful baby who will be two the day after tomarrow, thank god. what ultimatly 'worked' was weight loss and prayer. the depression made me lay down and refuse to eat which caused the weight loss. the prayer removed some of the stress.

pcos doesnt prevent you from getting prgnant, it just makes it more difficult. the hormones and stuff get stored in the fat which sets the balance all off. losing the fat will help bring the balance back. from what i have read, you dont actually get cured but yeah it can be greatly reduced.

as for when to try again. i would definatly wait a year. your body will have undergone some serious physical changes and needs time to properly heal. this is inline with modern recomendations to not get pregnant for a year after delivery. also, getting pregnant will not allow you to keep the normal wls diet and will set you back. lastly but most importantly you need to remember the health of the baby. that first year, you are fighting to get the nutrution YOU need and cant really spare anything for the baby.

good luck and best wishes.

Hi there!

I am new to the boards also. I want to tell you that I'm in the same exact situation. I am married for 7 years now with no children. I have PCOS and have attempted clomid 5 times with no luck. I know that being overweight (morbidly obese) is a factor and although I could have gone onto IVF, I knew in my heart it was not the right thing to do with my weight so out of control. What is the point of getting pregnant when the risks of pregnancy due to obesity were so great?

So, I elected to have RNY and am happy to say that I had my surgery on 10/27/09. While the road will be long, I look forward to 12-18 months down the road when I can start actively trying. LIke you, I pray that the weight loss will reverse the affects of PCOS, with infertility being the first to go and we will conceive naturally when I get the green light.

Best wishes to you on your journey and know that your are not alone. I read posts out here and get inspired and filled with hope each day. Thanks to all of you who share your stories.

Topic: RE: New here and new to PCOS
Hi, I'm new here...but not new to PCOS.  I had a dermoid cyst removed in '05....experienced slight infertility  in '06 but conceived within 6 months w/ Metformin and delivered a healthy boy in 07....experienced alot of hair loss during and after the pregnancy....I still shed from time to time....I have a really hard time losing weight with traditional methods.  It's very frusterating.  I have a horrible family history of diabetes, heart disease, DDD, arthritis, etc, etc, etc....

I want to be healthy, but I fear more hair loss and difficulty losing weight.  I am considering the band b/c the risks of bypass scare me....and I may not be done having children and want to be able to provide my body with the nutrients and the band provides that flexibility...My baby took a lot from my body.

I am looking to get started with everything after the first of the year--insurance!.  Any advice?

I went to the doctor today and had my levels checked. At 304.5lbs, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). In my doctor's opinion, it was a huge contributor to why I had such a hard time keeping the weight off.

Well, the levels are VERY normal now. Though there is some controversy as to whether someone can be cured of PCOS or not.... my doctor told me I am... especially if I keep up with the weight loss.

It's a great feeling to know that I am rid of this. It's nice to know my levels are normal and will give me an opportunity (some day a long time from now, lol) to have a healthy pregnancy.

2019: 11 years out and maintaining a loss of 150lbs.

Topic: periods, periods, periods!
Hey everyone - I'm not sure I've posted on here before, so I'll introduce myself - I'm Jen and I had the sleeve on 10/2.  And now to just launch into my personal business...I feel like I've been getting my period constantly since surgery! And that's only a slight exaggeration - I've had it every other week like clockwork. I'm on the mini-pill which was controlling my PCOS well prior to surgery. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? What is the DEAL?! It's driving me (and my boyfriend!) crazy!!
