Topic: Splenda & PCOS questions

Okay- so here' s the story:

My family are really on my case about splenda lately, They seem to think I use too much or that I shouldn't use it all because they feel that it's bad for me ( e.g. raises blood sugar, causes similar problems of sugar, and has cholorine it in) and yes these people are people who have not gone through GBP. I have two or three coffee's a day- iced coffee and put splend in them, I don't feel side effects from the splenda but I'm looking for research or infor about this?? of just feedback?

Second thing:

I have PCOS and have had it before surgery, but no one really actually told me what to do about it. I'm worried and have heard some stories about not being as successful with GBP due to PCOS slowing down weight loss. Have any of you seen this or been effected by this? Do you know where I can find info on this? I'm of course worrying because i'm stalled again and seem to stall more often than others. I know I should be happy to have lost almost a 100 lbs and all but I still have 100 to go and want to make sure I'm aware of keeping on track and doing whatever is necessary with PCOS and GBP. I have thought about emailing Lynn at the Center but I'm not sure if I should or not.

Thanks for your help!

I agree with you and everything that your doing before you do your surgery. But from what I understand and have seen the most effective surgery for any type of co-morbidity is the DS. I had gastric bypass but still have hbp, diabetes, so I think if I would have known about DS at the time I would have gone more towards that end. I know its alot more complicated but what surgery isn't. But its best you research and do whats best for you and what you feel comfortable with. Good luck hope everything falls into place for you.

Topic: Has anyone Tried Vaniqua???
My Dr. wrote me a perscription for Vaniqua cream to slow/ reverse facial hair growth, but my insurance doesn't cover the cost so before I send the $80.00 on it I would like to know if anyone has used it and your experiences with it.

Thank alot!

I have Mirena too!   I love it!  You can have it for up to 5 years.  The best thing is I don't have a period.  I have not had a period in 4 years...which also means no cysts - I don't ovulate.

Yes, PCOS basically prohibits weight loss. My primary doctor told me that WLS is not a going to get rid of my insulin resistance. However, it is one of the best things people like us can do to lose the weight. Plus, it is going to help with so many of my other problems I have because of the weight.  It is so unfair that we can go on a diet and lose 5 pounds and someone else would lose 30 pounds. I truly believe that PCOS is a curse!  Weight gain, unwanted hair, inability to have children in some cases…nightmares to most women!    I just want to do my homework. I am wondering if I need to go for gastric bypass, the sleeve or DS? I’d like to learn what people on here have experienced and maybe what their doctors have suggested.

PCOS slows down your WL because of the insulin resistance. I am one that knows because its done it to me. I had my WLS and I am 8 months out tomorrow and have lost 50 pounds where others have lost that in about half the time. I am not complaining but the symptoms are awful. I have also read that there is no actual surgery that cures the pcos but it will relieve some of the issues. My issues seemed to have gotten worse after the WLS but would still do it over. I am currently looking into having a hysterectomy due to other issues and hope it will clear up or atleast help me with the symptoms. But the insulin resistance is the worst of them all because of my fluctuating blood sugar levels I am still on metformin and bp meds. Which sucks because I was hoping to get off of them after the WLS.  Your hormones do tend to get out of whack afterwards but eventually get back to normal so they say. I say even though surgery will not cure pcos you should go through with it and feel good about it. Like I said my symptoms are still there and may have gotten a little worse but I don't regret having the surgery. Now I just hope to get them under control.....

Topic: RE: Ovarian Cysts post WLS

Aside from the cysts that they found they also diagnosed me with dysplasia. Which they did the leep procedure and now I am having to go every 3 months for routine pap. Which I hate I can no longer have kids because I had tubal 6 yrs ago and have continuously requested a hysterectomy. My OBGYN has declined to do it each time. Which I don't really understand why. But have decided to go to a different Dr. to get a second opinion. I am no longer having my periods at all and know that it could result in endometrial cancer and do not need that. I have done extensive research on my condition which is pcos related and feel that the hysterectomy is my best option.

Hi Soft..pls see my response to the OP if you haven't already. Also, please know it's not ok to continue in the type of pain you describe by taking ibuprofin (sp?) and NSAIDS are not allowed to post RNY patients in any event so you are quite possibly risking a healthy pouch in the process. I will probably never know how long I "carried" my cyst (left ovarian) or how fast it originally grew because except for the fatigue/LETHARGY which was generally attributed to obesity I had no symptoms/pain until post RNY.

As I understand it the ultrasound provides for the most reliable diagnosis but torsion (twisting and cutting off blood supply) can still be difficult to detect w/out surgery. Because my cyst was so large and cancer could not be 100% ruled out it initially looked like I would need open abdominal surgery to remove it which obviously would have been harder to endure than the LAP ultimately performed. But after a CA125 test and endometrial biopsy and the sample recieved from the original aspiration were benign, it was determined the probability of metastisizing was much smaller than the risk of open surgery.

I feel very fortunate/appreciative that my WLS surgical team was in close consultation w/the OBGYN surgical team so everyone could see/consider the BIG picture. Yet I am dissapointed my complaints of lethargy/fatigue/generalized pain/weight gain were so readily attributed to obesity that a CT scan/ultrasound wasn't done two years pre-RNY when I started seeking relief from the medical professionals. So again, research research research, connect the experts and be your own best advocate. Best Wishes.

I had a massive (12-14cm) ovarian? cyst incidentally discovered 1 week post RNY when I presented to ER with excruciating upper abdominal pain that appeared to be eminating from one of the lower RNY trocar sites. They ran a CT and found the "fluid collection" pretty much filled my pelvic floor but because of the size it was impossible to discern it's source and rule out secondary fluid collection due to the RNY. They were able to determine from the ultrasound and other indications it was not septic and most likely benign. Anyway because it was pushing my organs around and pressuring my incision site(s) and because I was just one week out of major surgery my WLS surgical team consulted w/an OBGYN surgical team and elected to do a CT guided aspiration which almost certainly saved me from developing a hernia and the downward sprial related to complications therein if not my life and allowed me time to heal from the RNY. I went back to the OBGYN 3 months later for followup and it appeared the cyst had resealed and filled itself cuz it was now 14cm again. The OBGYN was fabulous in her explanation, diagnosis and recommendation reasoning and removed the cyst lap two weeks later. The healing was actually more painful than the RNY I think because it involved lower ab muscles this time but two weeks out from that I felt FABULOUS. Get a second opinion, research, research, research, and be your own best advocate.

Topic: Best WLS for PCOS?
Hi everyone,

I have been dealing with PCOS for 20 years now.  I have my first appointment to see a surgeon on Oct. 15th.  I am wondering what others have learned about PCOS and WLS.  I also would like to know what the most reccommended surgery is for PCOS.  I really want to be as educated as possible about the options before I speak to my surgeon.

Thanks!
