Topic: RE: Pregnancy After WLS?
I have never posted here before but feel compelled to respond to your post. I too have only one working tube and ovary. My husband and I tried for 3 years prior to WLS which I had on March 30th. I'm down 63 pounds. I had my first "unmedicated" menstrual cycle 5 weeks after surgery. Then again 36 days later and now it's starting to regulate itself. I don't take anything other than the multivitamins and iron. I'm believing that the WLS will definitely restore my fertility and I'm looking forward to it. Looks like we will both have something to look forward to. God is good.
Topic: RE: HELP Byetta and Switching Birth Control after 8 years of the same brand.
The only symptom I have is that my hair is thin. Luckily since i've been treating my pcos since i was 16 years old I do not have acne, facial hair and the terrible list of other symptoms. I just called the pharmacy to see how much Ocella was compared to the Zovia and Yanmin's generic costs a dollar more than Ortho Tri Cyclen! haha Thanks a lot!
Topic: RE: HELP Byetta and Switching Birth Control after 8 years of the same brand.
Hi, I also just recently changed my birth control from Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo to Yasmin. Yasmin is available generically which allows you to save from those stupid brand name copays. (Generic Name: Ocella) My OB-GYN stated that Yasmin was the best for PCOS and when I looked it up this is what I found:Yasmin birth control pill is considered "potentially ideal" for PCOS hormone treatment.12 This is because it contains the progestin called drospirenone, which is an antiandrogen.3 I found this information right off of WebMd. It also states that Norgestimate and Desogestrel the hormones found in some other birth controls are also great options. This is because they do not increase androgen levels. But these BC's are only ideal if you have PCOS related acne, hair growth and loss. Zovia 1/35 does not contain these hormones. Honestly if you don't have any the symptoms listed above and it is just being used for irregular periods, I am sure Zovia will be fine. Sorry if this sounded like a medical rant, I am just so tired of most DR's not knowing anything about PCOS it makes me sick. Anyway I took Byette about 2 years ago and I did lose weight but that was because it made me sick about 3-4 days a week. I hope you have better luck on it than me. Take care, Jenn.

Topic: RE: Band or RNY?
Thanks ladies for the reply...my doctor advised at his seminar that he will not do a DS unless you are 600# (which thankfully, I am no where near). I don't mind the inconvenience of running back and forth an hour each way (at least) for band adjusments, because for me, it would reinforce my commitment to my tool. The idea of my body only losing half the weight I need too doesn't thrill me though, and I wonder if I could be one of the people who could be the exception.
The 2 things that concern me most are that I've had 2 other surgeries that have resulted in lingering pain/swelling in the surgical sites, and I am concerned that Gastric Bypass would too, and I read in literature provided by my Bariatrician that one of the cons of of Gastric Bypass is gradual weight gain over 15 yrs. I'm not in a hurry to have my guts rearranged, lose weight...only to regain it back gradually. What's the point? I don't expect (or want) a quick fix, but a permanent one.
This is all I can think about all day/all night, and can't seem to make a decision. Anyone have an "ah ha!" moment?

Kristy, you girls are beautiful! That picture of Amanda is hilarious - her smile/laughter is contagious!
Topic: RE: Band or RNY?
Hi ladies! There are also a couple of other procedures. One is VSG, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, where a portion of the actual stomach is removed. It includes the portion of the stomach that produces the "hunger hormone" ghrelin. The other is Duodenal Switch whi*****ludes a VSG PLUS an intestinal bypass. You can research these and other procedures on these boards. Like Kristy, I too didn't go for the band because of the foreign body and high maintenance aspects of it. But all these procedures are choices (and aren't we lucky to have them!). I wish you much luck in your journey to regain your health regardless of surgical procedure. Take care.

Topic: RE: Help! Pregnancy after RNY
I'm a success story! I had my RNY almost 5 years ago and am very happy with my decision. Anyway I too have PCOS & went through 8 years of failed fertility treatments. I was clomid resistant & responded very poorly to injectables. I lost 114lbs and was at goal at 12 months. My surgeon gave me the ok to ttc but due to an anti-TB medication (non WLS related) I was on I could not ttc yet. At 16 months post op (and just after finishing my medication) we decided to ttc. I tracked my bbt (basal body temp) and we DTD around ovulation according to my temps and boom...got a +++ pregnancy test! I had a healthy pregnancy & baby girl who will be 3 in just over a week. Then last year we decided we wanted to make her a big sister and once again tracked my bbt to time DTD with ovulation and boom...once again got pregnant! My 2nd pregnancy was also healthy & we had a 2nd baby girl. So...for someone who couldn't ovulate with dang near all the meds in the world...I was able to get pregnant 2x both the 1st month trying after surgery. Good luck to you when you try!

Topic: RE: Band or RNY?
Personally I prefer the RNY for PCOSers due to the way we're 'reworked' it aids much more quickly in resolving IR & diabetes. Also with a higher average weight loss your likelihood of loosing enough weight to resolve your PCOS symptoms is better.
For me the Lapband was not for me. It's too high maintenance for me. Just cut me and be done (aside from labs)...no fill...fill again...fill again...oops...too much in now take some out...oops took too much out put some back in. No worry about band slippage or erosion with the RNY. Plus for me I don't exactly have the best luck with foreign bodies IN my body (I still have some pain & swelling from a plate & screws in my leg from a fracture in 2001). That and lastly it was the average weight loss...I was not going to go through surgery & still be "fat".
The choice is up to you though. I do know a few ladies who've done well with the lapband (but they don't have PCOS so I can't exactly compare ya know?). Good luck getting your surgery regardless of which one you choose!

Topic: RE: pcos facial hair before and after wls?
Nothing should happen to it since once a hair becomes what they call "terminal hair" it is permanently that way. The only way to permanently get rid of terminal hair (or any hair) is by electrolysis. Laser is also good but may regrow. The only thing I could see WLS helping with is preventing our vellus hair from becoming terminal (thick) hair. It's just like men who are transitioning to become women, they need electrolysis even if they are taking female hormones.
As for epilin, it's looks like any another waxing system. Since it does not contain any prescription drug designed to decrease hair growth, it can't claim to do so.
I personally had laser treatments about 5 years ago and am sooooo happy with my results. It really changed my life.

Topic: Band or RNY?
I had my first consult yesterday, and the doctor recommended the gastic bypass for me. I'm interested in that, but very scared. I am also very interested the Bands, but he thought based on my PCOS and personal ciru****tances, that the most I could expect to lose would be 50 lbs vs the 100 the RNY would shed.
I'd like to know the experience of other PCOS women, and whether or not you'd recommend your particular procedure to a cyster.
Thanks!
