Topic: RE: good food for suffering with PCOS
I have known I have PCOS for at least 10 years or more now. I've always found a low carb diet worked best for me (prior to surgery that is). However, I have been following a plan that my surgeon's nutritionist gave me for the last 5 or so days and I've lost 5lbs doing that diet. It's a low fat diet.
If you are interested in the plan I'm following you can find it on my blog.
Best of luck to you!

Topic: RE: I've always had problems but this is ridiculous
try nuvaring, it's been a godsend for me. It's absorbed directly through the vaginal walls, so you don't have to worry about not absorbing the pills
Topic: Nuvaring and Surgery
So, I'm on the Nuvaring and it's set so that I change it every three weeks and get a period every 2 1/2 months (periods are very intense and painful for me so i take 1000mg of metformin and nuvaring) Anyway, my question is whether or not it has to be taken out for surgery. This would be a problem if i was nearing the end of the 2 1/2 month's because my period would automatically start. Anyone have any experience with this?
Topic: RE: Dark skin around neck
My doctor said that the darker, rougher skin around my neck, knuckles, underarms, wrists, etc, would go away within a year of significant weight loss. To tell the truth, the thing I'm most excited about, is shaving my underarms, and it actually looking like I shaved, it's always dark! Also, I've noticed for years now that no matter how much lotion I use, the rest of my skin is never as soft as everyone else's. I hope that goes away too.
Topic: Recommendations for psychs?
Hi Everyone. I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I think this may be the only population who knows the answer. (I'm also posting this on the soulcysters.net message boards, but I thought you guys might have an answer.)
I am moving to DC in July, and I recently had Realize band surgery. I am seeing a therapist here, but I want to continue seeing a therapist when I move to DC. I am looking for a doctor who is knowledgable about PCOS and the mental stress it brings (e.g. terrible symptoms, trouble trying to conceive, trouble losing weight, etc.). I also need the therapist to have knowledge/experience working with people who have had weight loss surgery, because (as we all know) the post-op life carries its own stressers, including dealing with new eating habits, working on new life patterns, and staying away from food addictions.
I would appreciate any recommendations of therapists (psychiatrists or psychologists) in the D.C. area. Even if you are not sure if they have experience in both of these subject areas, I would appreciate any names and I can do some additional research on them.
Thanks!

Hey sia! I forget to come on this board sometimes..hehe
i've seen you on the DS board though...so here's my offical HI!..."hi." ; )
i was just thinking today about my PCOS symptoms. I've been plucking away at facial hair, and shaving, as usual... and actually there hasn't been a lot of regrowth! that was a nice surprise. I'd heard it could happen, and have been pretty pleased!
I noticed my leg area has lightened up (it was just starting to get dark) though my more "intimate" area is still dark-ish.
my period is still off the wall though, but i've always been super sensitive. Every time i lose weight, or heck, even TRAVEL. (I've stopped a period a DAY into it, because i took 12 hours to drive and fly to visit family. i'm THAT sensitive.) So, today, even though i was a week into a new pack of Birth control, i started old aunt flo ..go fig.
BUT...the symtoms are SO so so SO so SOOO much better than they ever have been! any symptom you could think of to add up to a horrible period i have..and these past couple times have been great...and getting better!
so, those are some nice things i've noticed since WLS : )
something to look forward to!
i even saw the other day that someone on the boards posted that they had a baby!!
i think you're going to be happy, and do great! : )

Topic: RE: Hope for pregnancy after RNY
Hi Michelle!
As I was reading your post, I could have sworn I was reading my own life story! I, too, am 37 and have been suffering from PCOS for many years. After spending over $20,000 in fertility (IUI and IVF), I learned that wls would increase my chances of conceiving. I found 2 studies that revealed favourable results in women with PCOS that had become pregnant. I went ahead and applied through our provincial medical insurance for out of country surgery and just found out I have been approved for wls! (In Ontario it would take months to have the procedure, so they are covering my surgery in Michigan to expedite it.)
None of my fertility doctors even dared to tell me to lose weight, because they know how difficult it is for someone with PCOS - I just wish one of them was open minded enough to tell me that wls would help!
Anyway, my wls journey will begin this summer and I was told I could try conceiving 12 to 18 months post-op!
Thank you so-o much for your very encouraging post and Congratulations on your pregnancy!
All the best!
Lesley

One of my previous obgyn's didn't know what they were, either, and I just learned last year that PCOS is the reason. I have to say that since surgery, I've had fewer, thank goodness.
I hate them!

Failure is not an option!
Topic: RE: Recently diagnosed with PCOS and need advice
Hi.
I am 30 years old, and I have PCOS. I was diagnosed when I was 27. (Actually, I was diagnosed when I was 13, but no one ever told me.. but that's a whole other story.) You're PCOS symptoms can vary over time. For me, I have always had terrible weight problems - even when I was doing boot camp type workouts 5 days a week. I have never had acne (knock on wood). I have always had excess hair growth and it got worse as I got older. Shortly after my diagnosis, I started becoming depressed, partly because its very shocking for someone to tell you at 27 years old that you may never have kids.
It is important to make sure you find a doctor that knows a lot about PCOS, because the best thing is to find out how severe your PCOS is, e.g., what are your insulin levels, what are your hormone readings, whether you need to start taking medications to manage your hormones or insulin or other things. PCOS can be managed.
Another thing to know is that PCOS increases your risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, infertility, and other issues as you get older. So, it will be important for you to start tracking your numbers - e.g. blood pressure, cholesterol, liver enzymes (for fatty liver), testosterone levels, insulin, fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c. I get a physical every year, and I have a chart that I keep so that I can log my numbers to see if I am trending up over time.
A fabulous resource is soulcysters.com. There is a huge amount of information on the website as well as message boards. I found it to be very helpful.
I hope this helps. Good luck with everything.
