Topic: RE: Metformin after Surgery
I was just thinking about this myself. My surgeon actually told me that I could stop the metformin. I had surgery on 4/18 and have not taken it since two days before that. I talked to him again yesterday and told him my concerns about stopping it right now. He was ok with that and told me to go ahead and keep taking it. I think I will wait until I get down to a healthy BMI before I stop taking it...and then see how it goes. Mainly, I take it to have regular periods and a few other minor symptoms.
Good luck with your journey!

Topic: RE: bleeding non stop after WLS
I've not had surgery (rny) yet but can tell you there are other options to help with this issue. I had very wacked out periods thanks to PCOS and would go months with nothing happening , then a period here or there.

In 2007 (january) I began a period. It never stopped. I bled straight for just a tick under 9 months. We tried to stop it with 2 different medications, one only stopped it for 2 days, then it began again. This was a debilitating flow--- it got so bad i could not go out after a certain time of the day when it would ramp up.  I was keeping the hygeine product companies in business!

Finally, it took a D&C (at age 28) 3 days before my wedding to stop the bleeding.  I was mortified at the thought of wearing white and bleeding like crazy, but woke up the morning of my wedding and aunt flow left town!!!!   The following week I was put on birth control pills (Apri) to regulate my cycle.  THat worked like a charm.

There is another type of uterine treatment if you are past the stage of childbearing--aka you don't want children anymore, that may help. The doctors can explain that option if you are interested in it.

Topic: Metformin after Surgery
I was diagnosed with PCOS and insulin resistance over 5 years ago.

I am having surgery on Tuesday and because it is complicated to get a liquid version of metformin I have decided not to take it for the month I'm on liquids.

We all know that PCOS can be treated (to some degree) by weight loss.

I did the glucose tolerance test to find out I had PCOS.  After surgery there is no way that I can do that test again.

So my question is...

How do i know I still need metformin?

Not sure if this helps or not, but I have PCOS and have been taking 2000mg metformin/day. I had VSG on May 8 and my doctor had me stop metformin completely.

Maybe ask your doctor to look into Aygestin (generic Norethindrone). I was on that several years preoop. It completely suppressed my period until surgery when nothing seems to!  I actually had a D&C yesterday to hopefully give me some relief.

I know the D&C wasn't my first choice but it does seem to be helping, not to mention he was able to rule out and fibroids/abnormalities that could not have shown up on an ultra sound.

Honestly, if your doctor has not suggested something better after 6 months, maybe you should seek a second opinion. I know it sucks to even think of having to find a new GYN but there is no reason to bleed that heavy for that long.

I hope you feel better soon!  Keep me updated I would love to know what works for you incase I need more options to suggest!

I only had 1 period every 1-2 years before my WLS, which was almost 6 months ago. I have been on the depo shot ever since the surgery (hoping that the PCOS is gone & I am finally ovulating), & I have been bleeding for the entire 6 months. It's frustrating because I too bleed very heavily at times & have extremely painful cramps...not to mention my crazy hormones!  My doctor said the pill is not an option & I really don't want an IUD...so I'm not sure what other birth controll options I have.

Topic: RE: Prometrium??
I've never been prescribed prometrium (progesterone) while pregnant...but I miscarried my first and my 2nd pregnancy I'm certain was successful b/c of the provera (medroxyprogesterone) I took to try and start my period.  With PCOS we tend to have very low progesterone...and a successful pregnancy requires progesterone. Wishing you the best!  I'm hoping to have VSG to help conceive again and control the PCOS and my weight later this summer!

Topic: Post op period problems
I am 3 months post op, and since surgery my hormones are apparently out of control.  A little history:  I have only 1 ovary, no tubes thanks to cysts.  My periods were horrible in high school and most of my adult life I have been on Depo or Aygestin to just completely stop my periods.

The meds I used pre-op don't seem to work anymore so my doc put me on a birthcontrol.  The first didn't work (Ortho-Cyclen) and so I'm staring my second (Desogen).  My periods are insane.  I have bled more days than not in the last month.  I am home now from work because they are so heavy I literally can not function unless I am close to a restroom.  I think I took 6 showers over the weekend.  (I'm trying not to be too graphic)  I had to file FMLA today because I have lost so much work time.  I am at my whits end.  Someone please tell me I am not alone in this after surgery.  I have spent most of the weekend just boohooing because of all of this.  My doctor is usually open to any suggestions I can bring as far as medication goes.  What has worked for you guys post-op?  Has anyone dealt with this?  I am at my whits end.
