Topic: RE: Anyone else have TERRIBLE sugar cravings??
Well, my suggestion was going to be a low dose of metformin. When I first started taking met my cravings for sweets almost disapeared. Have you had lab work recently?

"You can't be crushed if you don't have the same results as someone else. I can't stress how important this is. A dear friend put it to me like this...who cares if it takes you 2 months to loose 10lbs...you are still 10lbs lighter than you were 2 months ago. It took me 10 years to gain all this weight, so expecting it to come off in just a few months doesn't really make much sense."
I know that what you said makes sense but at the same time it wouldn't stop the dissapointment, ya know? I have my first non-surgical WL visit at the end of this month and I'm going to make sure to bring this up. The second reason I want to have this surgery is to be able to have another child. My husband and I have been trying for over 2 years, meds, u/s, pokes and prods haven't helped. It all becomes over whelming after a while.
Thanks for replying and good luck.

Topic: Anyone else have TERRIBLE sugar cravings??
I am 3 years post op, haven't taken anything for my PCOS since before my WLS and recently my VERY oily skin, acne, facial hair and awful, constant, nagging cravings for sweets have begun to resurface. Of all of the symptoms, the sweets cravings are the worst because I've started to regain quite a bit of weight and of course, because I'm eating sugar, I dump. It's awful
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to curb cravings for sweets? I mean I know what I could be eating instead of sweets, but I need help to try to get the cravings stopped (or at least reduced) in the first place.
Trying to avoid the inevitible of getting back on Metformin....

this isn't the first i've heard of someone losing a lot of weight with wls and their pcos coming back. thats scary man. i mean it sucks. i'll just have to stay on top of it. having pcos sucks.

I think the best thing to do is to evaluate on an individual level - you need to go to your own doctor and have them track your levels post WLS and let them determine what you need. Everyone responds to WLS differently and your body still goes through changes as you getting further out post WLS.
I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2003 and was taking 2000mg/day of metformin - I HATED IT. It made me sooooo tired and useless feeling while my body was getting used to it. But once it did, the main thing I noticed was that I wasn't constantly craving sweet/sugary foods.
I had RNY just over 3 years ago now - 11/2007. I'm actually looking up my old PCOS doctor to setup an appointment because in the past year, my PCOS symptoms are getting out of control. My acne is TERRIBLE - my face is drenched in oil and I'm breaking out all the time. The worst part has to be the cravings. I crave sweets constantly and it's worse now because not only is it making me gain weight back but I DUMP! I'm beginning to feel desperate - WLS is not a cure-all for PCOS. Absolutely it helped, yes. I lost 80 pounds, but again - I'm gaining again and feel like I did pre-WLS.
Doctor's are the only ones who can really give you the medical advice you need....

I hate to burst your bubble :-( I had my RNY 11/14/2007 - my cravings for sugars got really bad in 2009 and are out of control and although dumping is HORRIBLE, the cravings almost always win. The dumping can take 15 minutes or more after eating whatever sweet to happen and when you want that candy bar or ice cream so BAD - your mind is screaming at you - you convince yourself that a) maybe I won't dump this time or b) i seriously don't care if I dump, it's worth it. Also, I learned very quickly from reading food labels exactly how many grams of sugar I could handle at once without dumping and so I knew if I ate half a snack sized snickers and saved the other half for an hour later, I could have the whole thing without dumping. I need something to help me not have the sugar cravings at all :-(

Hi there,
I'm the original poster from above. I had my surgery on October 25th. I can't tell you how much weight I lost because I stopped looking at the scale. I can tell you that I feel like I'm a slow looser. I have started going to therapy and learned that this entire thing is a process. I had the lap-band surgery which relies on fills in order for you to feel a tightness. So far, I haven't found that sweet spot yet, since I have only had two very small fills. Most people start really loosing weight at around 9cc's of fluid in there band. I only have four, so hopefully when I'm all filled up the weight will come of a bit faster. For now I am still thrilled with my surgery. It sure protected me from gaining weight over the holidays.
You can't be crushed if you don't have the same results as someone else. I can't stress how important this is. A dear friend put it to me like this...who cares if it takes you 2 months to loose 10lbs...you are still 10lbs lighter than you were 2 months ago. It took me 10 years to gain all this weight, so expecting it to come off in just a few months doesn't really make much sense.
I wish you the best of luck with everything! Keep us posted about how everything goes for you!
