Topic: RE: My story. Can anyone relate?
I know that this thread is old but I still wanted to say thanks to those of you who wrote it.  I am hoping to have VSG done by this summer.  I have HTN and PCOS.  My surgeon told me that the surgery would "immensly" help PCOS symptoms but said nothing about weight coming off slower.  That never crossed my mind.  I'm currently on 1000 mg of met daily.  Is that a dose I can keep up after surgery?  I have mainly been on the VSG board and I've marveled at how quickly people drop the weight and I would have been crushed to not have the same kind of results.

Hi ladies, I have been visiting the RNY board but are new to your board.  I have PCOS and am looking to have RNY as soon as I can. I just got an email that Tricare approved my visits to my surgeon, and my doc put in the referral on Thursday...so I'm really excited!  I go to the seminar at my surgeons on Wednesday and already had all of the blood work done, so the ball is rolling!!

I was wondering how losing weight has helped with your PCOS symptoms?  We have two little ones...one amazingly came naturally after my husband and I gave up, and the other one needed Clomid and the shot.

Is there anyone who is now free of symptoms after losing a bunch of weight?

Hey everyone!! I currently am in a bariatric program, in the nutrition phase. I was diagnosed with PCOS in may of this year and have done well on metforminXR but still to drop weight. I was dead set on having the lapband but after my meeting today im leaning more towards the RNY. My nutritionist said that the RNY usually reduces the signs of PCOS where as the lapband does not. I was wondering why everyone picked the surgery they did and if any of the side effects of PCOS have gone away?

Even if you do not have your ovaries, PCOS can be a lifetime condition because for almost half of us it is also known as metabolic syndrome. http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/256806-overview

Speaking to an Ob-gyn might be the more informative choice but I will say that I've been told by my ob-gyn  that just because you don't have a period doesn't mean you don't ovulate.
Good Luck.

Topic: RE: Facial Hair
A physician once explained to me, that once hair has grown on your face, it will not go away.
You can slow or stop more growth but it will not go away even if your hormone levels stabilize.
If you are lucky enough to have darker hair, laser hair removal is an awesome option.  If you are blonde like me, daily shaving in the shower is the norm.

My testosterone levels and periods became normalized after being put on Metformin ten years ago.  The facial hair I had then is still with me.  The male pattern balding pattern slowed and stopped with the normalization of my hormones.  However, I am about 3 months post RNY and it seems my hair is thinning a bit, on my head, that is.  We will see, I may be paranoid as no one else has noticed it.

Good Luck!

Topic: getting pregnant
Hello all.  I am new to this forum as well.  I'm sure my story is a lot like yours out there.  My husband and I tried to have kids right after we got married.  We were unsuccessful after a year of trying.  I already knew my sister had PCOS and I was soon diagnosed with it as well.  I began seeing a reproductive endocronologist.  I went in for many many tests, as well as my husband and they didn't have any information.  We began using Clomid and nothing.  We tried injectable medications (gonal F and follistim) and still nothing.  We had a few unsuccessful IUI attempts and the doctor turned to us and said "we are using 3 times the normal amount of medications and nothing is working."  So she told us it wasn't going to happen and we should look towards WLS.  At the time, I was about 340.

So in January of 2009, we went to NYU Medical Center in NYC and began the process for LAP RNY.  I needed 6 months of supervised diet for my insurance to approve and everything was looking good.  I had 5 out of the 6 months and GUESS WHAT??? I was pregnant.  I gave birth to my son Jacob on 1/7/10.  A healthy baby boy.

I realized that I wanted to be around for him for a very long time so in September 2010 I went to Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, NY and started the process over again.  This time I only needed 3 months so on 12/9/10 I had LAP RNY and I've never been happier.  This is a life changing decision and I'm glad to have done it.

I don't hit this board to often.

Yes I had hair before surgery.

And I'm now almost 5.5 years post-op and its still there. That hair will never go away. It will slow down in growth, I know I had issues with a 5o'clock. I spent 5 hrs one weekend a couple months ago and plucked every hair on my chin. So now between the meds I'm on, since my PCOS was only relieved lightly for the first 2 years post-op, then came back gradually with force, I only have to pluck every 2-3 days and even then they are not "long" or noticable.

Topic: RE: PCOS still not better...need to loose more weight
Well I'm in your shoes that my PCOS did not get better other than I got rid of insulin resistance by having the DS, which helped with PCOS a little.

But I recently had to get put on Spironlactone, to help with the hormone levels. It did help me pull 20lbs off that I gained. So I'm thrilled with that and it has also helped the facial hair problem to slow down. Talk to your OBGYN, and let them know your concerns. I didn't want to admit to mine but after I thought about it my things were snowballing ever since about 2 years Post-op.

I know there is a debate over weather PCOS can be cured with WL & WLS. Honestly at this point I think there needs to be 2 catagories to it. Metabolism driven (aka weight) and Hormone driven PCOS. As some lose weight and get relief of PCOS (except the hair growth...it slows but never goes away), others seem to have it hormone driven which has a vareity of ways of showing. Well here is a bit of a tidbit for thoes who think PCOS is only a "FAT" related issue. Jillian Michaels of Biggest Loser fame has PCOS. That woman doesn't have a scrap of fat on her just about.

So go to a good OBGYN (one that listens) and see what they can do help. Chances are a hormone imbalance is holding thoes lbs on.
