It's too bad no one's replied. I haven't had my surgery yet, but I'm really interested in hearing about other people's experiences....

Topic: PCOS still not better...need to loose more weight
I had my GB 02/01/2006.  I lost about 42 lbs.  I have gained back about 10 lbs since.  I was small to begin with (212 lbs) so I knew my weight loss wouldn't be huge.

I exerise like crazy now and have been for the past 4 years, maybe missing about 6 months in total due to some personal things that I was doing.  I am now trying to get back on track because I am now getting married June 11th, 2011....

Can anyone, please tell me what I can do to get these 10 lbs off of me.  To jumpstart this thing again.  My eating habits aren't out of control, and exerise is one of my best hobbies, I just can't seem to get this tomgether.

Can anyone who is new out, or even old out who is still maintaining, help me and give me a menu or some pointers on getting back on track the way I should.  Again, I'm not doing bad, but want at least these 10 lbs off before my wedding...

Help me out.

PCOS still not any better.

I have been on it for 3 weeks now. At first I had issues but its much better now. I think because she started me on once a day for a week and then 2 the following week and now 3 times a day. Did you try taking it for awhile? I too went off of it once, but I have noticed a huge difference in my hypoglycemia.

I have had the same issues so I went an visited a endocrinologist for the answer. I have been having horrible hypoglycemic episodes almost on a daily basis. I couldn't take it anymore. After one day I was watching this show called "Work Out" and the personal trainer was saying that you must balance your blood sugar cause once you are hypoglycemic and you eat, its stored as fat cause in a sense your body is saying store the food cause its a signal like it is starving. Its a fight or flight mechanisim. After a year and a half after my RNY it started happening and that is when my weight started going up. At first it wasn't alot but soon and over time I gained more. I started at 278 and got down to 136 and now I am at 198. I couldn't get this hypoglycemia under control.
So recently I went to an endocrinologist and she ran a bunch of blood work, including a thyroid panel and a glucose tolerance test. Anyway, my thyroid panel was completely normal, but my glucose test came back abnomal..sort of. I was normal and then I bottomed out to a 43 which is not good. I have been as low as 25. I was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia. I have insulin resistance. She explained this to me and it made sense. My pancreas is working normally so when I eat, it releases insulin like its suppose to do. Well my cells that are suppsose to accept the insulin is like a egg shell and the insulin cannot enter into the cell and has no where to go. So instead fat cells readily accept the insulin resulting in weight gain. So what happens when the insulin is in my blood stream doing nothing, its lowering my blood sugar causing me to become hypoglycemic.
Anyway, she put me on Metformin and is having me gradually increase it. I am up to 3 times a day starting tomorrow. I started at once a day. One thing I have noticed is that I have not had barely any hypoglycemic episodes. It may be the reason why people will lose weight on it. I think this may be my answer. Its 3 weeks tomorrow I have been on it. So time will tell, but seeing this happen when I always had daily episodes of it and be almost completely gone is awesome! So I have high hopes on losing weight!
I hope you find your answer and if its anything like mine you may want to talk to your doc.

Are you seeing a physician?? If you are not , you really should.  Go to an endrocrinologist that specializes in PCOS. They will prescribe meds that will control your PCOS, not to mention help with weightloss.  The first few weeks I started my meds I lost 15 pounds and it certainly helps with the sleep. The will also prescribe meds to control the hiurtism (facial hair) or hair loss in your case.  For the acne, they would probably place you on Birth Control with the appropriate hormones.  I found YAZ works great!

Well good luck!

Hello, I'm new to the site. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16, I am now 27. The symptoms now show, which they didn't before I had my daughter. The horrible weight gain, sleep apnea, the acne, hair loss... you name it, it shows. I was wondering where I should start to get my life back, is it possible?

I was diagnosed with PCOS several years before my RNY. It has been seven years since my RNY. During those years, I hit plateau after plateau. I feel that the plateaus were because of the PCOS fighting with the RNY. But, as time went by, my metabolism speeded up, and won out. I reached my goal weight just last year. It was HARD when those numbers didn't budge for (sometimes) months.  I often went on an all liquid diet, and sometimes that helped to break the plateau.  I stuck with the program, worked with my TOOL, and got through each plateau (finally). The thing that I will say, is, don't let plateaus discourage you - no matter how long they last. Find out what works for you.

Did anyone have facial hair before surgery? What happened with it after surgery? Is it still there or gone? Just wondering.

Metformin is horrible stuff.  I HATED taking it.  The extended release is supposed to be easier on your stomach.  I stopped taking mine because I am no longer TTC and am waiting on RNY.  I have had friends use Maca Root with great success.  2 of them conceived within 6 months of starting it.  It also helps regulate your periods.  I actually used it to help regulate my period after having my daughter.  Vitamin D is supposed to help as well.  My OB told me when I was pregnant that a lot of women with PCOS are Vitamin D deficient.  You can also try Chromium.  B Vitamins are essential as well.  You may want to increase B12 and B6 beyond just a multi-vitamin since you have PCOS.    Non-herbal methods would be stuff like Mucinex or Robutussin to thin your cervical mucuous.  That is supposed to be very helpful for women with PCOS.
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/64557/treating_pcos_with_vitamins_and_herbs_pg2.html?cat=5  This article says Magnesium is generally low in people with diabetes.  Maybe take a Magnesium supplement to see if that helps with your insulin resistance.
