Topic: RE: Fortamet?
Nope. It's also known as Glucophage or Metformin (generic name). It's been around forever. Originally used to treat type 2 diabetes, it's also used for PCOS b/c it desensitizes the insulin receptors and helps with fertility problems in us.
Topic: RE: Anyone from here successful with ttc treaments?
Yes it can!!! I had a stillbirth at 25 weeks back in 1997 and then 5 miscarriages after. I was diagnosed with type two diabetes and "possible" PCOS in October 2004. I was put on Metformin, Wellbutrin and Lexapro, dropped 80 pounds and conceived triplets (without fertility interventions aside from artificial insemination). I delivered healthy, full term twin girls in July 2006. The third embryo ended up not being viable and reabsorbed in my system betwee 7-10 weeks gestation.
They are 4 now and my partner and I want another child after I finish nursing school in 2012-2013.

Topic: RE: PCOS but no Cysts????
I only had one known cyst and that was nearly 16 years ago. My labs were fairly normal (but I had been on metformin for YEARS prior to testing) but my endocrinologist, who also as PCOS said I was classic textbook and started me on spironolactone, which I responded to favorably. Everyone is different!
Topic: RE: Question for fellow PCOS'rs
Hi there,
I am one of the few PCOS'ers that has somewhat regular periods. They don't know why, lol. My periods are always excruciatingly painful and horribly moody, bloaty and miserable. I had a cyst rupture in 1995 and it was awful. Right at midcycle for me. Not fun. I feel one brewing on my right side, so I suppose I'll have to find a local GYN and have it checked out.
Not sure how I'm going to manage them after my surgery...but you're not the only one!

Topic: RE: PCOS after Hysterectomy
Hi there,
I'm not sure about your specific case, by my surgeon told me that although the RNY will significantly reduce the PCOS symptoms and possibly regulate the hormones, it may never go away completely.
I would get a second opinion on the ovaries, though....

Not to OH (since 2002!), but to this board. I have classic PCOS but MINUS the irregular periods (most of the time). I had a stillbirth in 97, then 5 miscarriages before finally conceiving triplets---and giving birth to fraternal twins in July 2006 (the third reabsorbed by 10 weeks). I had been on metformin for 18 months prior to conceiving. The girls are 4 years old now.
I have the voracious appetite, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, have gained 75 pounds since I had my girls (lost weight in the pregnancy), facial hair, very oily skin, acne, depression, anxiety, mood swings, et al. My last endocrinologist took over for my original one (before I moved from TX to CO) and she diagnosed me based on my symptoms. I responded well to spironolactone and metformin but am told I cannot take spiro after the surgery.
I am scheduled for RNY surgery on December 14 of this year after trying to get various insurers to pay for it for a decade. Would love to connect with others who have had WLS and are dealing with PCOS--something tells me this is gonna be an uphill battle for me....

Topic: RE: Diet from my PCOS doc
I was on South Beach Diet between 2003-2004. It DOES work! The problem I have is that I crave sweets and carbs RELENTLESSLY! I am due to have surgery in December and am worried about this. I almost wish I would dump and get sick with carbs after the surgery so I won't want them.
Topic: PCOS after Hysterectomy
I had a hysterectomy (ovaries remaining) 12 years ago and was diagnosed with PCOS and endometriosis in 2006. Oh the joys of PCOS!!! I am waiting to have RNY and was told that the PCOS would "go away" after surgery. It was recommended that I have my ovaries removed after Gastric Bypass by the doctor that diagnosed me. Anyone have any ideas?
Topic: RE: Diet from my PCOS doc
I'm not sure if anyone on here has done it. I haven't, but there is this other forum I go to called SoulCysters and there are women there that have success with it. I've gained some weight, quite a bit, about 50lbs. And I plan on trying to stick with the 70% protein 30% veggie. That's what my surgeons nurse recommends. Also going back to only eating 3-4oz.
