Topic: Hi All
Been at a Center for Weight Control for 2 mos now, working towards losing 5%. My PCOS was the major reason why I joined a bariatric surgery program.
1.) Anyone with PCOS feel like they're having more trouble losing weight than others?
2.) For those in "normal" range... are your fertility chances better now?

Topic: RE: Metformin - What's your dosage?
Currently I'm taking 850mg 2 times a day with it I also take 100mg of Spiriton and brith control. I haven't been off of the birth control since I was diagnosed so i'm not sur ewhat my cycle would be like. Before treatment i'd have it maybe 3-4 times a year and just before being diagnosed I was having 26-30 day period when it did come.
Apparently my hormone level are perfect but every now and then my insulin levels increase to the high 20's-30 range when it should be 21. I have never found that the metformin has helped me with weight loss, some people have great results on it.
I'm on the waiting list for surgery now and my surgeon figures it will be sometime in the next 4 months. I so hope that loosing this weight will increase my chances of become pregnant.
Good Luck and beware if you increase your doage your tummy isn't gonna like you.

Topic: Metformin - What's your dosage?
Hi everyone...
I haven't been on the boards for a really long time and I wasn't active on this one. I had Lapband in October and I am down 70 pounds with another 100 pounds to go until my ultimate goal and a perfect BMI...
I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2006 when I completely STOPPED having periods. I have had all of the symptoms and according to my blood tests my LH levels are completely opposite of what they should be. My OBGYN put me on 500mg of Metformin a day and I was on it for 3 months with no luck. I asked to increase my dosage and she then gave me extended-release 500mg that she said are equivalent to 1000mg with less side effects. I really only had side effects the first two weeks anyway.
I have now been on the extended release tabs for 2 months and no sign of a period. What is your dosage level? I have heard of women getting up to 2500mg a day before they get their cycles....and my dr is refusing to increase my dosage. Should I go to a different doctor? I want to have a child so desperately!!!
Thank you for your help...
Alison

Topic: RE: Thanks Dr. Phil for that NOT informative bit on PCOS
Part of that is due to the fact that PCOS can be a precursor to diabetes.
Insulin Resistance
People with the metabolic syndrome have a 5-fold increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Most of the people I've talked to MY age who have PCOS ARE diabetic.
I'm 55 and way beyond childbearing years, I still have PCOS and diabetes. I've had PCOS since I was 12 but we didn't diagnose it until 2000 based on clinical presentation of symptoms. By then I was already on metformin for my diabetes. The reason I can pinpoint when I developed PCOS is the development of my symptoms. And I had about 80% of the classic ones. The only one I can't say I had was infertility because I never tried to get pregnant.
PCOS is a lifelong disease and one of the reasons I am having WLS is to attempt to "cure" it so that I can go into the rest of my life and not worry about heart disease and all the other issues we face with PCOS as we age.
But if I have to remain on metformin after the surgery, so be it.

I started my process about a month ago. Everything was pretty easy. My BMI is 49 with 1 comorbility. My referring doctor turned in all my paperwork last Friday and got the ok this Wenesday. I didnt have to wait six months or anything. You can email me at [email protected] if you have any more questions.

These are what I have found:
http://www.springsunday.com/vitex-extract-chaste-berry-planetary.html
I guess I just worry I will get the wrong type or something, who knows. lol But these say they are specifically for womens hormonal balance. I wonder if i should do the 2WW to make sure nothing happened this cycle. Guess it couldn't hurt me to go ahead and order some to have here if I dont get a +hpt.
Oh and how did your first ultra sound go? Did the DR put you on progesterone supposetories or anything?
