Has anyone made a quilt out of your "now too big" clothes?

I saw a post on another MB by a woman who was going to make a quilt out of her "too big" clothes to remind her of where she came from. I think it is an awesome idea and was wondering how she would do it. I can't find her post now. any ideas? Ronda

I think that is a fabulous idea! i imagine you could just cut squares from the clothes and make a scrap quilt. there are lots of simple patterns out there for those. I would think you would need to be careful of the mixing of different types of fabrics but I am a novice quilter so maybe there is a way around that.

Funny you should say... I just hacked up all my size 26 & 28 jeans and I'm gonna make a rag quilt. Got LOTS of fabric there! LOL I even made one square with a back pocket for interest! (maybe to even store before and after pics?) Nothing too flashy, just 6" squares, maybe with an embroidery design on a couple of them. I'm thinking of embroidering "320" (my pre surgery weight) with a line through it and whatever my weight will be when I finish the quilt underneath it in one of the blocks as a reminder. I'm thinking of using flannel for the back. I'm going to take 6 1/2" squares, layer it with 2 layers flannel, one in place of batting and one as the back (also 6 1/2" sq) sew right sides together with 1/2" seams (the seams to the front of the quilt if that makes any sense... I picture it but cant explain it) Then you cut the fabric almost down to the seam every 1/2" or so. When you put through the wa**** gets raggy. I'll get a pic posted when I'm done =) Have a great day ~janine

I BUY BLUE JEANS AT GARAGE SALES AND AM WORKING ON MY THIRD QUILT. I'VE DONE 6 INCH BLOCKS AND 3 BY 5 BRICKS. THEY ARE THE WARMEST THINGS. MAKE SURE YOU CLIP YOUR SEAMS SO AFTER YOU WASH AND DRY IT THE SEAMS FRAY FOR YOU.

Hi Tam. Do you think you could send me some directions for your quilt? Like I wrote Janine, I'd really like to try making one. I'm just starting to learn to quilt, so I could use all the help and directions I can get! Thanks. Peg

Janine, this sounds like a great idea! I'd like to do it too, but I gave away my "too big" clothes. I guess I'll go garage sale shopping. I'd love to see a picture of it when you finish the quilt because it sounds really clever and like something I'd like to try. Thanks. Peg

Peg- I'd be more than happy to send you some squares... I have tons of jeans and only want a queen size quilt... the amount of blocks I have would make 3 queens! LOL Maybe a jean swap would be a good idea? =) Janine

Maybe a yo-yo quilt would be a fun project with circles cut from the clothes. Have fun! Jan in Florida
