Hello Dianne,
Yes, someone is out here!! Currently I'm collecting fabrics and patterns for youngster quilts. I'm making each of my neices, nephew, great neices and nephews quilts. Two great neices are finished! I finished a lavender quilt top last month and did a navy floral print & white on white for my bed. I've taken both to the machine quilter we have in the area who is CHEAP!!! The Navy and white on white I'm making pillow cases to match and some ruffled throw pillows. I love to rotary cut and speed piece. Drop me a line!

Here's a website for Louisiana shops for you. Hopefully one of them will be nearby. Most, but not all shops offer a beginning quilt class, also see if your schools recreation program offers such a class, or even a community/technical school near you. Good luck.

I'm sorry you don't live close by. I teach beginners. You may still want to go to a quilting group, don't be intimidated by their work though. You will persevere. Many groups or people in the group will "adopt" a beginner and help them learn. Start with a small project; pillow or throw or wall hanging. Yo-yo's are also a fun beginner project. It's totally handwork and you get used to the hand sewing and coordination involved. Good luck!

I live in Baton Rouge, LA. I've been looking for a quilting class for 'DUMMYS'! My grandmother before she died use to quilt every grandchild (all 12) a quilt every year for Christmas. I never had any interest as a child but now I really want to learn how. I can't find a place in this area that has classes for beginners. There are many quilting groups that meet but they are not for beginners.

Funny you should say...
I just hacked up all my size 26 & 28 jeans and I'm gonna make a rag quilt. Got LOTS of fabric there! LOL I even made one square with a back pocket for interest! (maybe to even store before and after pics?)
Nothing too flashy, just 6" squares, maybe with an embroidery design on a couple of them. I'm thinking of embroidering "320" (my pre surgery weight) with a line through it and whatever my weight will be when I finish the quilt underneath it in one of the blocks as a reminder. I'm thinking of using flannel for the back.
I'm going to take 6 1/2" squares, layer it with 2 layers flannel, one in place of batting and one as the back (also 6 1/2" sq) sew right sides together with 1/2" seams (the seams to the front of the quilt if that makes any sense... I picture it but cant explain it) Then you cut the fabric almost down to the seam every 1/2" or so. When you put through the wa**** gets raggy.
I'll get a pic posted when I'm done =)
Have a great day

I think that is a fabulous idea! i imagine you could just cut squares from the clothes and make a scrap quilt. there are lots of simple patterns out there for those. I would think you would need to be careful of the mixing of different types of fabrics but I am a novice quilter so maybe there is a way around that.

I saw a post on another MB by a woman who was going to make a quilt out of her "too big" clothes to remind her of where she came from. I think it is an awesome idea and was wondering how she would do it. I can't find her post now.
any ideas?

Here's a website that features the Turning 20 quilt. It's 20 Fat Quarters. My sister and I wanted a queen size, so used 30 Fat Quarters. I'm also adding a 6 inch border, that is one of the options in the pattern. It's a lot of fun too.

Chris
I don't know what a turning 20 quilt is? Maybe you can explain?
