OT: What's your area of expertise?
Hey Nurses,
In an effort to keep the RN forum alive and kicking, I'd like to survey all you nurses out there:
1) What is your specialty?
2) Other areas of interest or experience?
3) Years as a nurse, and how long it took to master skills in your area?
4) Your dream job?
As for myself, I work in Home Health-both Med/Surge and Pediatrics. Prior to that my experience has been in NICU and Peds.
I've been a nurse for 6 years, and still working on mastering my skills.
I'd love to own my own business helping in the growing geriatric community, any idea's?
~Jenn~

Hi Jen!!! I'm an old ICU/CCU warhorse. I have always worked in Cardiac since I graduated. I started out on a tele floor and then went to the Acute Units (that's what we called our CCU's). Stayed there 13 years and had 2 really bad back injuries. Had C3/4 fusion in 1995 and then C4/5 with titanium plate in 2001. Ever since the second one I've been disabled. Had a lot of nerve damage to C spine and L spine. Have a neurogenic bladder because of the L spine damage. But I miss the unit like hell. I want to be back so bad and the old body just won't let me. But now my 28 year old son is in RN school and working as a nurse tech in our children's hospital. He and his girlfriend will both be RNS and both love peds. I'm hoping after having WLS, I can lose the weight and be at a physical level that will enable me to go back and get my masters and teach. I'll never be able to do bedside again. The neuro said even if I lost the weight, the back is gone. It'll make it less painful but won't cure it. I said I can live with that if I can teach. So that's my plan. Hugs. Andrea. PS Dream job???? Team nurse for the Dallas Cowboys, yeah baby!!!!!!!
Hi Sister Nightengales!
I've been a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for 23 of the 33 years that I've been an RN. I've been in collaborative practice for the past 10 years and see about 20 - 25 kids a day newborn to 21 y/o. I work in an urban area now and never know what language I'm going to try to play charades in at every new patient encounter!! Bosnian, Vietnamese, Russian, Chinese, and West African. I was a Department Director (glorified head nurse) for a peds outpatient clinic for a university med school for 5 years -- riding herd on med students, interns, residents and attendings and keeping my nurses from killing them all!! Never again.
My Dream Job? Celestial Glory where I'll be out of business!
Pat
To Jenn: Get some experience dealing with insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid and become an elder advocate. Elders and their families, that might live far away, need someone to deal with all the bureaucrasy and watch over the bills as much as they need good nursing care! PC
I have been a nurse for 25 years... nearly 20 of those were in Long Term Care on the subacute units. Got tired of the medicaid surveys that proved nothing and did nothing to improve the quality of life and care for our patients. So I moved to hospital... post surgical unit this year. No where near learning everything I need yet but I am getting there.
My dream job is a free lance photographer. Me and an unending supply of film or memory.... and contracts out the but for my work.
