Hi' I'm a RN who has never liked to be a Patient! Now, at last I'm facing my morbid obesity problem, and have decided to do something about it! W/O going into all the details(which you can imagine) I need to do a diet history as part of the pre-op approval process for insurance . However, I always tried on my own all the different diets, since I didn't want to go to a doctor for help. Is this going to fly on my diet history? I am VERY discouraged as I face this obstacle. Thanks for your suggestions.

It depends on your insurance and you will need to find out if they need documentation from a doctor. My insurance didn't require it, but my surgeon asked. I just wrote out my best recollection of dates and amounts lost and regained and it was fine. There are several Dr. Elariny patients posting on the DS board. You should stop by. ______ Jeanie DS 02/12/05 - Medicare Approved Dr. Gary Anthone - Omaha NE 5' 10" -85 big lubs Read about the Duodenal Switch surgery at http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/surgtype-forums/DS/ and http://duodenalswitch.com

Hi Sharon, I hear what you are saying. Write your diet history as best you can. Include all the times to weigh****chers etc.... When you go to the doctor's do you weigh in? If not start! I hadn't weighed in a very longtime but I had the history documented by my doc. Did you ever do phen-phen? if so put it down. You should also get your doc to go along and start a medically supervised program for you. Read your insurance plan very carefully. Some won't cover anything that even mentions weight loss. Don't get discouraged. You have taken the first step by acknowledging your obesity. It was very hard for me to face that I was "super morbidly obese" with a BMI of 55. I now am 21-22. You are a bright lady I am sure. Do your homework and make sure you are pursuing a great surgeon that has a comprehensive program with longterm follow-up. The surgery is only a tool. It won't address the reasons why we eat, the stress in our lives and jobs, etc... Start looking at these issues as you prepare for the journey. What ever the wait it is worth it. Take care, Robin 1/12/04
