Post-op time off question
I'm still waiting to get approval from my insurance now, but I'm trying to get things organized before hand. My question is, how long should I ask to take off from work post-op. I know all the literature and the bariatricians say 6 weeks before you return to work, but is that realistic? I work as a RN in an O.R. and I frequently have to do heavy lifting and stand on my feet for long periods of time. I'm planning to have open RNY surgery. I'm was hoping I would hear back from my fellow nurses who know what it's like to work those long hours on your feet all day. How long before ya'll went back to work?
I really didn't take any time off. Had my surgery 8/11/05 as a lap rny; home on the 13th, had ER skills day the 15th, computer training the 16th and went to work my first 12 hour shift the 17th, but only doing triage. I'm on a "no lifting over 20 pounds" restriction. Fortunately, our ER had been able to allow me to work within this restriction lately. Plus, I'm 7 on 7 off, so looking forward to a 7 day period of walking, relaxing

Lisa,
You need to speak with your surgeon and ask them how long you will need to be off. C/sections are off for 8 weeks. An open RNY should have at least the same time off. You should also check to see if you can return to work with restrictions. When I was staff my unit never allowed us to rtw with any restrictions.
Take care,
Robin
