I am 3 weeks post lap RNY and have been waking up with a burning sensation in my stomach. I was taking 150 mg Zantac in the AM My surgeon had me change to 1 in am and 1 before bed. I also chew 2 tum before bed but still wake up with this burning. Dic said I amy have to try prilosec next. Pre op I had bad GERD EGD showed alot of acid. Does anyone else have experience with this? I am just so afraid that this isn't normal. Advise please. Thanks Lori M

I would try the prilosec or even Nexium (that's the drug of choice at my facility)... From what I understand (yes I'm only preop) the GERD symptoms usually do dissapear in a few months.

I had surgery on 05/02/2005. My surgeon said that I would not suffer with GERD after surg. Well, let me tell you, after surg. my acid reflux was as bad as ever. At my 6 week check, my surgeon told me that I couldn't be having heartburn because the pouch did not have the acid pumps. I was just miserable though because I'd run out of the protonix that I took pre-surg.. Well, the nurse practitioner told me that I was probably a hyper secretor and to go ahead and take Zantac. It's cheap and OTC and won't hurt anything as far as the surg. is concerned. I did and I still take it but I've been able to cut down to 75 mg. bid.(Most days). Andrea ps my surgeon still refuses to believe that I am having heartburn!

Yes, I had similair problems post-op and was placed on pepcid...I am now 10 weeks post op and haven't needed it for a week or so and from what I have heard from others, that is fairly common. Debbie
