Furious in NOLA...
OK, it's official, SOMEONE does not want me to have this surgery! I got a call from my surgeon's office today telling me that my white blood cells were elevated (12.3) and that he wants them whithin normal limits by surgery or he's not doing it. Well, my WBC's are NEVER whithin normal limits!!! In my last 4 cbc's my WBC has been (12.3, 12.3, 12.6, 12.0). I told my surgeon that for some reason they have always been slightly elevated my entire adult life. Maybe due to allergies or NSAID use. In order to have surgery, he wants me to find a physician to state that they have been seeing me, I am healthy, and that there is no reason for concern over my elevated WBC's. To top this whole insult off, my PCP never came back after the hurricane. Neither did my OB/GYN or my internist. So, now I'm supposed to find a doctor who has never seen me in my life and get him to write a note to my surgeon stating that I am completely healthy and my bloodwork is not important. And do this before my surgery which is 4 days away!
Has anyone else had their sx cancelled due to bloodwork? Any suggestions on what I should do? All input is appreciated...
Lisa
Hi Lisa,
I amost had my lapband surgery cancelled two dys before because of a low dilantin level, 3.1. My seizures I was taking it for was under control. I have a seizure disorder and was taking oxycontin and it caused seizures at night. I took 400mg qd and it stopped it.
The anesthesiologist got his undies in a bundle and it took three docs to tell him not to worry about it.
THEN insult to injury, the three days I was in the hospital, they never gave me any dilantin? How ironic.
Have you ever seen a hematologist? There has got to be some reason you have an elevated WBC, which type?
Call your insurance and get a name of a PCP and try to get your lab results and a copy of the medical records of your surgeon you are seeing. Some docs want as much evidence.
I hope this helps.
Hope you get your surgery on time, what kind? Hope your hospital stay will go smoothly and you'll sail through surgery.
Take care,
