Hi, I went for my P.A.T. yesterday and was told I have to do clear liquids from noon the day before, then NPO after M.N. but no bowel prep? How can they do surgery on your bowel w/o cleaning it out? Believe me, I'm happy to forgo the prep but just want to make sure it's safe. Sharon

Every surgeon is different, mine said he uses the prep to make it easier to go afterward. Seems to make sense to me. I used mag citrate that you can buy OTC at your drug store and had a tiny BM (mucus) before D/C. Good luck with your surgery!!!!

Hi Sharon, I don't know, that seems very odd to me also. What procedure are you having? Pat

Hi Sharon, My doc used to use the ducolax suppos. the day before with the clears. I remember thinking this isn't going to work, and it did nothing but make me miserable. He now doesn't use even that and the patients are just fine. Weird I know. Good luck, Robin

I had open RNY, and did the same thing... clear liquids 24 hours before, and then NPO after midnight. I came through with flying colors, no complications....

Read an article somewhere about faster healing if intestinal flora is not having to re-establish Wish I could remember. I miss my mind.... Gail

The RNY doesn't go that far down the bowl, so you don't need to be completely empty. Clear liquids then NPO clears you out far enough.
