I am about to finish my first year of nursing school. I was looking for suggestions and ideas on how to follow the eating plan when you are so busy with classwork and clinicals. I am two years out RNY and have gained some weight back since I am having problems getting the required protein and liquids in. I would appreciate any help in getting back on track.

I do feel for you.... finding time to do anything while in school is tough. But in a way a post op WLS diet is easier. Protien bars and shakes are very portable.. You can stick one of each in your bookbag and always have a quick healthy meal on hand.. try to eat every 3 hrs.. between class and clinical and study. This will help keep you from snacking and keep your energy up. Exercise should be easy also. Elevators take too much time and stairs burn calories... carrying that 10 # anatomy book can build muscle and taking a walk is a great way to get some fresh air and think up care plans at the same time... good luck to you

Donna, I feel your pain even at work. Nursing is a huge contributor to our disease. I pack my food for the day. Get an ice pack and take tuna salad, string cheese etc with you. Avoid the veding machines and take time for you. Protein bars are great for the protein needs but be careful with the calories. You can get a cold thermos and put a scoop of protein in it then mix with water and ice, protein on the go. Also always take a bottle of water with you and have it in class. If you must ask your doctoe for a letter making it a medical necessity for you to have a water bottle with you. I also pack the vitamins for the day ina baggy so I can stick them in my pocket and take them every few hours. Last get your rest...I know...impossible. The fact is stress and lack of sleep with increase your cortisol and grehlin levels and make you eat more. Take time out to take care of yourself. I wish you the best in tough situation.
