I had surgery in June of 2005. I have been having hypoglycemia, previously I didn't have diabetes. I had an episode at work where my sugar dropped to 43. I went to the ER and they gave me an amp of d50. It only went up to 79. I have been eating every couple of hours to maintain my blood sugar in the 70-90 range. I am concerned about gaining weight. My primary accused me of taking insulin. After doing some blood work, his nurse was only able to tell me that my diabetes was under excellent controll. I told her I didn't have diabetes. That was the only answer I got. Do you guys have any suggestions or similiarities? Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks

Discuss this with your surgeon, who I hope would be more open minded and understanding than your primary care doctor. Also, you should schedule an appointment with your dietician to discuss this problem and how to address it in your diet. Good luck. Caryl

Emily, You are not alone. I know several people who have developed hypoglycemia and reactive hypoglycemia following surgery. It doesn't necessarily develop early post-op. There is a book you can get that has some great info in it....look at the OH bookstore for Caring for the surgical weight loss patient from Wheat Field Publications. You can also find it at www.drgaye.com . It is a great book and has a chapter that will address your situation and you can use it to educate your PCP. Just be sure to eat your protein so you balance your blood sugar. Take care, Robin

What is it you are eating every couple of hours? I too have had a few bouts of hypoglycemia. Usually it is after eating carbs. Bread, crackers, cereal, etc.. No problems when I'm eating protien. You can get yourself into trouble with rebound hypoglycemia if you are trying to right yourself with carbs tho. Andrea
