I also work nights, 12 hour shifts. I took 6 weeks off and I was a little nervous going back to work. I just packed my dinner and bottled water. I took too much food at first, not realizing just how much I would need or how hungry I would get. I work critical care, which can be very physical. My co-workers were great and were always there to help me if I needed it. It actually went better than I expected. Now I know what types of foods work best for me when I am working and I know how much to pack.

I work nights and wondered about the same thing, I have always had a problem losing weight and working the night shift. I am taking off 8 weeks just because(my employer made me wait to take the time off) I can , but I work in a female prison(clinic/infirmary) type setting. Other than the few emergencies asthma attack, gallbladder pain, chest pain the job is pretty light, no lifting. The other prisoners who bring them to the clinic will lift them in the rare occasion they need lifting. I was able to get a permanent manifest(paperwork) that I can bring my protein behind the gate because its medically necessary, withput that everything has to be consumed in the cafeteria. -Sorry to ramble like a person, but I'm getting sooooo nervous now that my time is finally near. -Best Wishes with your journey!!!! -Simone

Caryl, I know how you feel. Even though I am just in nursing school I can relate. Just to make you laugh...I was on surgery rotation last week and everyone made fun of me because I was the only person sweating in the or, all the nurses and docs were freezing of course. I just kept telling my self 2 things. First what an idiot I must look like and second I AM doing something about it. But after it was all over, I just had to laugh. I guess I am getting used to using the 'hot flash' excuse that way I don't have to say oh its just because i'm obease. I think most people in the medical field tend to think of our problems passively not actively like we do our patients. We are taught to be critical thinkers when we look at something. But for those of us who are obease we don't want to look at ourselves. So we tend to ignore things until we physically cannot any longer. But like the others have mentioned, step back and look at your own post. There is the answer. --Angela

I work nights and always have. I pack cottage cheese, string cheese, Slimfast low carb premixed shakes and cheese and cold cut wrap ups to take to work. I drink a bottle of water (2 servings ) on the way in and a bottle on the way home. I try to drink lots at work but usually end up with coffee or flat diet coke. But I do get 2 more servings in at least. On your first night of work you will probably have about 2x the protein but I always find on ty fisrt day off I only have about 20g of protein because my sleep is so messed up. But it all balances out. Nights has always been one of those inconviences and excuses as to why I ate so much so now I have used it to my advantage. I can just about pack in my protein in a night shift than a regular day!

Caryl, yes you answered your own question. Go see the doctor and use this as a lesson. You are wanting this surgery I assume to regain your health. Well a long the way we need to allow ourselves to be the patient and not the health care provider. Take care of yourself and listen to your body it will serve you in the future. Robin

I have worked some nights since surgery. You need to pack your food in a lunch pail and take it with you. Always carry water with you and you can get a cold thermos and take protein along and mix it with water andn ice from work. It does work. You will need to make sure you get your sleep of course and the exercise. There are exercises you can do while at work with downtime, walking, squats, etc..... It can be doable, you will just have to consiously make a plan. Good luck, Robin

Caryl, I think you answered your own question. Step back and tell me what you would tell your patient. Don't feel bad, I think it is just something that is built in to all of us as nurses. Joy

If I was one of my patients, I would be telling me to go to the doctor. I have been fighting off a UTI for almost a week. Over the weekend I started drinking tons of water and taking Azo-cranberry and felt better. Yesterday I slacked off on the water and quit the cranberry. Today I feel yucky. The burning is back and I feel run down. I have been drinking loads of water again and restarted the cranberry. I should so go to the doctor. Isn't it crazy when we do this? Caryl

Hi. I work nights, but haven't had surgery yet. I work in critical care and do a lot of lifting. I'm planning to take off at least 6 weeks. I'm a little jealous of those with a less physical job who can go back to work so quickly. I hope all goes well for you! Caryl

Topic: Any night shift nurses????
I was wondering if any of u work nights and if so how did you do after surgery getting rest in and making time for all the fluids and meals? I had my first drs appt last week and I have my psy eval today. Then it will just be waiting to hear from my insurance. Im so anxious to start my new life. I want so much to get healthy. Would love any tips you might have. I work nights at a drug and alcohol treatment center. So I dont do alot of heavy lifting ...mostly charts and alot of downtime. Thanks for any suggestions. Mariah
