Topic: Pre-op question for you fellow nurses
Wow, have I had a day from the twilight zone!! Only another nurse would believe it...On July 22nd my bariatric surgeon-to-be's office scheduled an appointment for me to have a colonoscopy and an EGD today . I arrived at the hospital at 6:00 AM as instructed. I followed the prep instructions to a tee-- Fleet's phosphate of soda 1.5 oz. at 6PM with 5 cups of water(orally of course) then, NPO P mid. Then I even did the recommended 2 Fleet's enemas early in the morning. (3AM) I had a 2 hour ride to the hospital to get there at 6AM today. I was awake most of the night. When the admitting clerk showed up at 6:15 (a very small hospital) he said, I don't have your name on my list--but I'll put you in the computer anyway. Then, it's off to wait in the day surgery waiting room to be called by the nurse. 30 minutes later, she calls my name. In front of a room full of people, she says, what are you here for? I glance around, then said, couldn't you respect my privacy? (very nicely, too) so she said, come with me. When we're alone, she says, when was your appointment made? I told her. She said, we have no record of it. I'm going to talk to the OR people...stay here. I said, ok and went back to my seat. The waiting room is very small, but it has a large fire alarm on the wall. Would you believe it went off and stayed on for 15 MINUTES! Much later, the same nurse as before says tocome back, and takes me to a cubicle for pre-op. I said, what did you say to talk them into letting me stay? She said, we're not heartless--if you did the prep, and drove so far to get here, you must have really been right. Then my doctor's associate comes in to do a colonoscopy on someone else, and she tells him about me, and asks him to "do" me next--he refuses, saying he's going to do a lap chole before me. Well, it turns out to be 11:30 before I get to have my colonoscopy and EGD. and a HUGE hematoma on my forearm where the RN in pre-op had trouble sticking me. My badge of honor for the day. It would have been just a wee bit consoling if the doc had once said, "I'm sorry about what happened today" I got home at 6PM I go to this doctor because he's supposedly the best on the East Coast, but his office staff needs help. My question is, should I tell my doctor, who is the head doc in his office ,about what happened today, or just forget it? Forgive me for whining. Love, Sharon

Hi Kat,
You should ask your doc how long he wants you out. Since you are lifting and do the physical labor of acute care. My doc says 8 weeks for nurses. If you have a "desk" job 2 weeks. It really is about 8 weeks before you feel like yourself again. I needed naps and got really tired if I over did it at first. I would also suggest you begin to think about what you will take for meals. It is so much easier to be prepared that to have to hunt. I still at 19 months take my food and water and protein with me.
Good Luck,
Robin

Anyone care to share how long they were out with Lap RNY? I'm calculating leave time (minimal, just started new staff spot)... and wondering how long I'm gonna be out of work and out of income

Hi Lori,
I am glad to hear you are doing well. It is funny you mention left side pain. In our group it is called trocar pain. Most of us get it just because. It is always in the area where the jp was. Take it easy and don't push yourself to hard.
Keep in touch,
Robin

Hi Sharon,
It is good to hear that you are moving along in the process. Know that sometimes you have to call the insurance to keep things moving along. You are your best advocate. Support groups are a nice place to find friendly faces. Don't ever hesitate to ask questions even if you think they are silly. I couldn't remember the long name for EDG either. I was thinking upper GI, close I guess.
Take care of yourself,
Robin

EGD stands for esophagealgastroduodenoscopy. Now you see why it's abbreviated. Basically, a gastroenterologist (GI doc) looks at the esophagus, the stomach, and the first part of the small intestine through an endoscope. This is generally done at the same time as your colonoscopy if you are having both done. Both procedures are done under sedation.

I came through surgery fine, today I think I overdid a bit. Went to the Baltimore Aquarium. Did alot of walking, took breaks but my left side is sore tonight. I plan to take it easy tomorow and I won't be back at wor****il at least Wed next week (maybe). Thanks for the thoughts chat soon. I used the same site, I like the nectar proteins. I tried the ones from GNC Isopure, they are tolerable mixed with juice, I didnt like the after taste. Take care

Hello Everyone! and congratulations to those of you who have dates set. I envy you!! Well, since my last post, I've met the surgeon for the first time, had my psych eval done, and worst news yet--the doctor is having real problems with the insurance company--and it's not about me, personally. It all started over something else, so it'll be at least 2 weeks before I know anything. Next, I still have to have a colonoscopy and a procedure called EGD done with a scope. I hate to show my ignorance, but does anyone here know this acronym? It's not in Stedman's 25th edition (the one I have) I did go to a support group meeting of my doctor's patients. It was great to be around others who have been through it and see them face to face. I appreciate all the replies you gals have sent to me, and i'll try harder to be on here more. Love, Sharon

Hiya!
You might want to ask your surgeon what he recommends. Some people are able to bounce back quickly and some don't. You won't know until you are there.
Are you having lap or open?
Good luck! Your day will be here before you know it.
