Lori,
Congratulatons on your surgery. I agree it is wonderful to find a message board for nurses. I am 19 months postop RNY-lap and am down 211lbs. What a difference it has made in my life. I hope your surgery went well and your recovery is on track. Take time for yourself. Nurses are the worst at this task as you know. I needed naps at first and am really glad I did it. My only regret is not starting and sticking to the exercise plan. It is crucial to maintain the lean muscle. If you need a source for protein, I order from Bariatriceating.com. It is easy and they are wonderful to work with. The IDS cappacinno is my favorite.
Take care,
Robin

Good for you Sharon. Keep working with the RD if you can. Any amount of weight you lose before surgery will help you and your surgeon in the long run. When we lose weight, internally it decreases around the liver and stomach first, doing this helps if you have an RNY-lap by making the liver lighter and the stomach easier to visualize. Keep tabs on the approval. My surgery was approved 2 months before me or my surgeon were notified. I found out by calling the insurance myself. Ask your surgeon when to get the test done. I had to have them before I could get a date, now they start when they actually have a date. I had to repeat a few because I had a six month wait.
Take care, it is all worth it.

Topic: RE: Diet History
Hi Sharon,
I hear what you are saying. Write your diet history as best you can. Include all the times to weigh****chers etc.... When you go to the doctor's do you weigh in? If not start! I hadn't weighed in a very longtime but I had the history documented by my doc. Did you ever do phen-phen? if so put it down. You should also get your doc to go along and start a medically supervised program for you. Read your insurance plan very carefully. Some won't cover anything that even mentions weight loss. Don't get discouraged. You have taken the first step by acknowledging your obesity. It was very hard for me to face that I was "super morbidly obese" with a BMI of 55. I now am 21-22. You are a bright lady I am sure. Do your homework and make sure you are pursuing a great surgeon that has a comprehensive program with longterm follow-up. The surgery is only a tool. It won't address the reasons why we eat, the stress in our lives and jobs, etc... Start looking at these issues as you prepare for the journey. What ever the wait it is worth it.
Take care,
Robin

Topic: RE: WI RN with a date
Hi Michelle,
I wish you the best as well. I am 19 months out now and must agree this is the most important thing I have done for myself. Your day will be here sooner than you think. I took 8 weeks off after my lap. Going back sooner may be an option if your unit will allow restrictions, but usually they won't. Also you will need to be careful lifting the epidural patients especially when pushing. My doc is very conservative with his patients and especially his nurse patients. He knows how we can be. I also do L&D, registry. Working after surgery is the hard part especially depending on your area and hospital. I plan my meals and bring them with me. I also have a bottle of water everywhere I go. The cafeteria is no longer an option. Take care of yourself after, no one else will.

Topic: RE: Any Georgia RN's??
Hi April!
I am a registered nurse from Macon Georgia. I've worked at The Medical Center since 1990. I currently work for a group of Radiologist. My insurance carrier is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia. BCBS stopped covering WLS this year--however my last understanding that a bill is in the house for approval for insurance companies in Georgia to cover WLS. Have you posted a message on the main message board here or look at WingsAroundAtlanta? You can view that website by adding http: and typing in //groups.yahoo.com/group/WingsAroundAtlanta/. I know that other insurance companies are still covering WLS--hopefully someone on one of these sites can help you with the infomation you need. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Meg

All those hoops are just steps in the process. It will be here before you know it.
I couldn't even send in for ins approval until all the testing was finished.
Good luck

Congrats Michelle, this is the best thing I've done for myself in I don't know how long.
I'm going back to work tomorrow, my short term disability approved me for 6 weeks and I took every day of it, LOL I didn't really need this much time off...but hey what the heck.
Topic: WI RN with a date
Hi everyone! I too am happy to see a board for RN's. I've been a nurse now for 7 years. I currently work in a maternity unit where I can be in either L&D or postpartum. My date is scheduled for Sept. 27, 2005. I was thinking about 4 weeks off.... I guess I'm not sure. Any thoughts about that?
Topic: Any Georgia RN's??
Hi I am looking to find out if there are any RN's from GA on this message board? In the Atlanta or surrounding area would be the best. I live in Monroe, GA. I am looking to change jobs, but only want to go somewhere that has insurance that covers WLS. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
April
Topic: RE: Sandra T., How are you doing?
I'm glad you're doing so well. Tonight is my last day at the "old" job. I'm sorry to leave the people I work with. They are a great group of people. Everybody understands though and quite a few have expressed indignation that our hospital claims to be a "bariatric center" yet does not cover surgery for employees.
I start my new job August 8th. I'm taking next week off to relax and try to get my house cleaned up a bit. I'm nervous about getting my hopes up. I'd like to get the surgery in the next 6 months if I can manage it. I hear First Health is tightening requirements for proving medical necessity. I'll keep you posted.
The wedding was great fun. I was a little sad it was over so quickly, but we had a good time. We took a little trip to San Antonio and Galveston for a few days. Phil is doing well. He is holding his weight now, not losing but not gaining. I think when he increases his exercise again he'll start losing. He was very gung-ho at the gym at first and then slacked off as his schedule got busier.
Take care. Sounds like you're doing great.
