Topic: RE: Flight nurse?
Kathy, I am an ICU nurse and I also do critical care transport via ambulance. I agree with you that flight nursing is an instant love attraction and I am looking forward to when I get to do it too. But for now I am getting my critical care training first. It is important that you have that foundation to fall back on as there is no doctor in the field with you. It is definately NOT an area you can go into directly out of nursing school. There are times I still feel nervous about ground transport with the complicated cases and it is more intense when you are in the air. I work with a nurse that is also a part time flight nurse and she has had years and years of experience before she got on that helicopter. Look into and do not get discouraged if you discover that it will take time. Be patient it will come if it is what you really want. It is just like WLS. Reach for your goal and you will achieve it !!! Pam G

Topic: Hello fellow nurses
I am so excited to see a message board for nurses here on OH !! My name is Pam and I am a critical care nurse in Portland, Maine. I am getting ready to have lap band surgery. I just started the process, have done the initial consult, psych eval and new patient orientation. I am looking forward to getting the rest of the required steps behind me and getting to the surgery date. I have no idea when that will actually be but I am hoping really hard for June 21 or 22. I go on vacation from work June 21 and will be out for 11 days so it would work out great. I look forward to making all sorts of new nursing friends here. Pam

Bonnie, I have to say that I totally agree with you on the risks of malabsorbtion. I made the decision to do the lapband for that very reason. I just can not help but feel like it goes against everything we do to promote health in our patients if we are running around creating on purpose a malabsortion problem for ourselves. No vitamin supplements in the world could be as good as my body's own digestive processes. But keep in mind this is just an opinion and every person has to make their own decision about what it right for them and what will work for them. Good luck with your decision, keep us posted. Pam G

I spoke to my surgeon about how far distal he goes and his opinion. He said he does the 150cm cut but he personally feels that it's more the pouch size than the malabsorption that affects the permanence of the tool. He did also go into his extensive experience (More than 3100 RNY procedures done over a 20 yr span, and not one death). He also noted that Lap procedures are the most common and that even those with scar tissue from prior abdominal surgeries could still get lap if the scar tissue had not adhered the omentum to the organs. At any rate, he seemed very knowledgeable and willing to discuss the procedure and it's details with me at length. I was very pleased to be treated as a fellow medical professional, rather than a "lay person."

Topic: Research Project
Hi RNs everywhere- I had my RNY in 2000. At that time, 1998-9 I did all the medline/medscape searches and there really wasn't much info out there. Things are changing I am an RN 20 years/ certified Psych mental health I am doing a research project on RNY and gastric banding. I am looking at long term weight loss, what types of support most people have, if the suppport was supportive or more like dysfunctional AA meetings, if sites like this are more or less helpful than the group meetings the doctors provide, things like this. Also including what kinds of problems folks had I have a questionaire that I e-mail out. I will not use anyone's name without permission. The responder can be as complete as they like or just give one/two word answers I would truly appreciate your input...I have gotton some great replys but demographically need more participants Please help me....thanks Di O'Brien, Or
